This article is so good that the Eagles might have Jeff McLane tossed from the press box for a second time.

It’s titled “Doug Pederson now leads an unorthodox coaching staff, and it’s his job to make it work,” and it goes into some detail about the recent coaching shakeup and the bizarre 36 hours that resulted in the firing of Mike Groh and Carson Walch.

You remember that. It was when Pederson gave his offensive coordinator and QB coach a vote of confidence, only to turn around and fire them the next day. McLane is reporting that the Eagles’ front office “wanted them gone,” resulting in this RE: Doug –

“…he became “irritated,” “frustrated,” “pissed off,” — descriptives used by sources to describe the coach — because he had already given Groh and Walch his word. But at some point over the next day, after meetings with owner Jeffrey Lurie and general manager Howie Roseman, “Doug suddenly became OK with firing both,” a source close to Pederson said.

The information obtained by The Inquirer on this subject and the Eagles’ offseason coaching moves came from team and NFL sources who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were either not permitted to speak publicly about team decisions or because they feared retribution.”

Really strange at the time. The rumor then was that Jeffrey Lurie and/or Howie Roseman stepped in and told Pederson to get rid of his guys, which seemed plausible because… why else would he fire them? Why would he fire them one day after saying they were going to return?

McLane’s story also contains a couple of nuggets about Groh and Carson Wentz, who reportedly “struggled to see eye to eye on the offense.” He writes that Lurie had some issues with the offense and wanted to shake things up a bit.

Anyway, it’s a good read. It’s all from anonymous sources, but that’s standard operating procedure these days.
