It’s a little strange that the Sixers hired a coach and some front office members before adding a President of Basketball Operations, but here we are. They did it backwards but ended up in a good spot anyway. Maybe they just got the best available people when they actually became available.
More on the Daryl Morey hire, from Shams:
It’s interesting, because we were wondering why Josh Harris didn’t address the media after Brett Brown’s firing. He didn’t speak at all at any point during the summer, leaving Elton Brand to be the public face of the franchise. Obviously Harris was still trying to make moves behind the scenes. Still looking to upgrade his team and fill out the front office.
The timeline is intriguing, though. If our mystery tipster is to be believed, the Sixers had an arrangement with Morey as early as October 12th. Doc Rivers was hired on October 3rd, and Morey resigned on October 15th, so it’s possible that they were working together behind the scenes prior to what Shams is reporting about October 18th. Not sure, so let’s look at this way:
It’s something to think about. When was contact first made? Was there a ‘wink wink, nudge nudge’ kind of thing going on while Morey was technically still with Houston? We’ll find out more, surely.
