As if COVID-19 wasn’t bad enough already, it’s threatening to close down one of Philly’s most iconic spots.

The Reading Terminal Market is up against it right now, with the pandemic severely limiting business for the almost-80 independent, mom and pop shops that operate inside the building. Among them are incredibly popular vendors like DiNic’s Roast Pork, Beiler’s Donuts, and Miller’s Twist.

Because business has been down, the folks who run the non-profit group that oversees Reading Terminal is running a GoFundMe campaign to keep the lights on, literally, saying this on the fundraiser page:

In March of this year, everything changed. The Market remained open, stocked and safe, ready for business and eager to serve you, but thousands of customers have been working from and sheltering at home, and have stopped coming to the Market to shop and dine. About 30% of the Market’s foot traffic comes from tourists, but conventions and events were canceled and people stopped visiting local friends and relatives or traveling for pleasure.

The Reading Terminal Market is open, ready for business and eager to serve you as we always have been.  But we need your help to sustain our operations and support our recovery, so we can continue to provide for our community.

We need your help to keep serving Philadelphia’s favorite flavors to all our shoppers.  We need your help to keep the lights on and power the building, keep the ventilation systems working, support the frequent cleaning and disinfecting that ensures that you will be safe when you come to the Market we all love.

As of publication, 3,342 people had contributed $137,710 towards the $250,000 goal.
