Remember all of the talk about possible name changes for the Washington Football Team?

Folks discussed the ‘Red Tails,’ ‘Generals,’ and ‘Warriors.’ Washington ‘Potato Skins’ was another suggestion floating around out there. Some were serious and some were not.

They ended up just going with a generic “W” and continued with the burgundy and gold colors, opting to keep it simple and punt the name change until later. Now “later” could perhaps be 2022, according to team president Jason Wright, who said this in an exclusive with Washington ABC affiliate WJLA:

“I think next year is fast because of how the brand has to come together through uniforms, through approval processes through the league,” Wright said. “Next year is fast. There is a pretty good chance we will still be the Washington Football Team next season. We could get there quicker, it’s actually pretty hard to get there that quickly because of all the steps that need to happen.”

You know, if Daniel Snyder wanted to be an asshole here, he could just tell everybody to stuff it and keep “Washington Football Team” forever. Wouldn’t that be a middle finger to the people who made him get rid of the Redskins name in the first place? Something to think about.

Obviously if they rebrand as something new and exciting they turn the page forever on the name change episode and then afford themselves the opportunity to sell a lot of new merchandise and usher in a new chapter of Washington football. Maybe that re-energizes the fan base or something along those lines.

Lots of things to think about in Washington. The team stinks on the field, they don’t have a name, and the front office is currently being restructured. Other than that, everything is going great.
