Did Doug Pederson consider benching Carson Wentz on Sunday night?

Nah, it never crossed his mind. That’s what the head ball coach said after the game and repeated this morning when asked again about his struggling quarterback.

Doug was asked a good follow-up by Tim McManus on Monday, who wondered what the “threshold” would be for a benching, i.e. how bad would the situation have to get before Wentz would be pulled?

Said Pederson:

“I mean, listen, Carson is our starter and we’ve got a lot of trust and faith in him that he can get the job done. By no means was I in a position to make a decision or make a move Sunday. It’s just something that we’ve got to continue to coach, got to continue to get better. He understands he has to get better in that area. We also understand that our backup quarterbacks have got to be prepared for a situation like that, or an injury where they need to go in and play. We continue to coach, continue to work every day, and Carson understands he has to get better. He’s mentioned that and said that and we need to move forward.”

(follow up question asking why he wasn’t in a position to make that move) –

“It’s pretty simple, Tim, my mind wasn’t there. I wasn’t going there. I was going to give Carson every opportunity to win that game for us. He’s capable of doing that and I wasn’t in that frame of mind.”

There you have it.

For what it’s worth, McManus brought up the 2008 Eagles/Ravens game, when Donovan McNabb was benched. That game was only 10-7 Ravens when Donovan was pulled, but he had thrown two picks at that point and the only Eagles score was a 100 yard kickoff return from Quintin Demps. That was Andy Reid’s threshold back then.
