Sports Twitter is always upset with somebody.

This unfortunate person will drop a controversial opinion, or they get the ratio, and then everybody piles on and the outrage either goes away or the subject in question is cancelled.

On Tuesday morning, it’s Booger McFarland drawing the ire of the blue checkmarks, and he doubled down on an opinion he shared Monday night about young, black NFL players, which came on the heels of Dwayne Haskins’ Washington release.

Here’s the follow-up tweet and video:

Hmm…

Well you could certainly say this is true for white guys. Johnny Manziel and other promising young Caucasian NFL players have flamed out spectacularly in recent years. Manziel was investigated for domestic violence and checked into a rehab facility before being released by the Browns in 2016. And Baker Mayfield did about 10,000 commercials to build his brand before he started playing well.

To Booger’s credit, he does start out in the video clip by saying this:

“often times young players, especially – and I’m gonna go here – especially young African-American players, because they make up 70% of the league…”

He’s technically of speaking about all young players, which he clarified in the tweet, but as a black man and nine-year NFL veteran, the message is absolutely tailored to young black players. He does have the experience to speak on the topic, and credibility as a first-round pick coming out of LSU back in 1999.

The criticism mostly centered around the fact that he was making it a ‘racial’ thing, and people were pointing out the plethora of young black men who came into the league with their priorities straight and excelled without getting caught up in brand building and other distractions. Guys like Russell Wilson, Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, etc.

Anyway, some outrage on Twitter. Nothing new there. Grass is green and the sky is blue.
