Wednesday night, Geoff Mosher and Adam Caplan with the Inside the Birds podcast reported that the Eagles were moving on from senior offensive assistant Rich Scangarello.

Additionally, Marty Mornhinweg is also out, and I believe John McMullen was first to report this, though Chris Mortensen gave us the NATIONAL confirmation Thursday morning:

Mornhinweg and Scangarello were here for just one season. Obviously we can assume that the “surround Doug Pederson with offensive minds” approach did not work. There were too many cooks in the kitchen. Too many chiefs  and not enough Indians. There are various cliches to suggest that less is more.

You’ll recall that offensive coordinator Mike Groh was fired at the end of last season, and Doug decided to instead roll without a traditional OC this year, going with the college and/or Kyle Shanahan-style “run game coordinator” and “passing game coordinator” instead.

Removing Mornhinweg and Scangarello, the staff looks something like this, currently:

  • head coach: Doug Pederson
  • defensive coordinator: vacant
  • offensive coordinator: N/A
  • assistant head coach/running backs: Duuuuuuuce Staley
  • offensive line/run game coordinator: Jeff Stoutland
  • defensive line/run game coordinator: Matt Burke
  • quarterbacks/passing game coordinator: Press Taylor
  • special teams: Dave Fipp
  • (and then various assistants and position coaches)

The real question moving forward is whether or not Doug is amicable to the idea of giving up play calling. Regardless, trimming the fat seems like a good idea, and bringing in a traditional offensive coordinator to help narrow the focus feels like the way to go. It seems like a more linear path to game planning makes sense for a staff that perhaps was a little bit bloated in 2020.
