Not sure if you remember, but one year ago this month the Eagles submitted four rule changes to the NFL.

They wanted to modify the blindside block rule, make permanent the expansion of replay reviews, and restore overtime to 15 minutes while offering coin flip alternatives.

The fourth proposal sought to provide teams with the option of keeping possession via a 4th and 15 attempt, instead of trying an onside kick after scoring. It did not receive approval and was tabled.

So this year, the Birds are trying again:

The Broncos tried a similar proposal in 2019, which was rejected. Kevin Seifert at ESPN points out that successful onside kicks remain incredibly rare, with only 3 of 67 recovered this past season. That’s barely more than 4%.

Honestly, while the 4th and 15 thing sounds kind of funky, it’s much better than the onside kick. Imagine you’re down 14, with 1:45 on the clock. You score to make it a seven point game, and then instead of a goofy onside kick, you get the ball at the 25 and have to try to complete a pass. That’s a lot more exciting and tenable and I think fans will respond to this positively.

NFL owners meet virtually at the end of the month to consider this rule change.
