Everybody Gets a Restructured Contract
With NFL teams scrambling to get under the salary cap, it’s almost more of a story when a veteran player is NOT restructured.
The Birds have already done this with a ton of guys over the years, and now in addition to Isaac Seumalo earlier in the week, Javon Hargrave is getting the restructure treatment:
More restructures are now official:
— #Cowboys OLs La'el Collins (creating $5.25M of space), Zack Martin ($7.05M) and Tyron Smith ($6.675M)
— The #Texans restructured WR Brandon Cooks ($6.53M).
— The #Eagles did the same to DT Javon Hargrave ($9.408M).— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) March 11, 2021
As is the case for most of these restructures, the Eagles are just taking money and converting it into a signing or a roster bonus, which then allows them to spread it out over the life of the contract. It’s basically just stretching the money, and they add these dummy or “void” years in order to maximize the proration.
In Hargrave’s case, he was originally scheduled to hit the cap at just under $13 million this year, so they free up $9.4 million for the 2021 season. The Seumalo restructure freed up another $2.4 million and we’ll see more contract finagling over the next few days. There’s also the possibility of releasing or trading Zach Ertz.
