Flyers vs. Capitals Betting Pick (March 7, 2021)

The Philadelphia Flyers are coming off a three-game series with their cross-state rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins. After dropping a 5-2 result to a Pens squad without their captain Sidney Crosby, the Flyers took the second matchup by a 4-3 result, despite sophomore winger Joel Farabee’s addition to the NHL’s COVID Protocol. After a solid performance in that second game, head coach Alain Vigneault opted to start Brian Elliott in net once again, but the result went the other way as Pittsburgh capitalized on defensive breakdowns and executed on the power play, skating away with a 4-3 win.

The Washington Capitals are coming off a 5-1 loss to the Boston Bruins, but have the benefit of entering play with an extra day’s rest, as they last played on Friday as opposed to Philadelphia having played yesterday. Washington had won four consecutive games prior to their latest loss, including wins over the Bruins, two against the Devils in New Jersey, and one over the Pittsburgh Penguins by a 5-2 scoreline.

Tonight’s matchup represents the second meeting between the teams this year and the first since the Flyers laid a 7-4 beatdown on the Caps in DC exactly one month ago.

Bets We Like With a Flyers Win

Money Puck gives the Flyers just a 54.9% chance of winning this game. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s implied win probability based on the moneyline is a pure toss-up at 50%.

Flyers Win and Over 5.5 Goals (+220, DraftKings)

The Philadelphia Flyers are in need of righting the ship after dropping two of three games to their bitter rivals the Pittsburgh Penguins. The Flyers drew first blood in their matchup with the Capitals a month ago, hanging seven goals on Washington in a 7-4 road win.

It’s an even more important game for Carter Hart, who is expected to get the nod in goal on the second half of a back-to-back for the Orange & Black. While Hart hasn’t lived up to the unrealistic expectations of some fans and media who posited a darkhorse run at the Vezina Trophy prior to the season, he’s been fine at home. Hart is 3-1-2 in games played at Wells Fargo Center this season, though this will be the first game he’s played with Philly fans in the stands since last season. In his three wins at home, Hart has allowed a total of seven goals, while he’s conceded ten goals in the three losses, including a 28:09 performance when he was chased by the Buffalo Sabres. Hart hasn’t played since allowing five goals on 27 shots to the Pittsburgh Penguins on March 2. We expect a bounce-back performance, while Philadelphia keeps up their scoring ways against the Capitals.

As for the over/under, you’ll need to get in on the alternate total with DraftKings to get the 5.5 number, but it’s worth the effort. Each of the teams’ last three regular season matchups have seen the total exceed six goals.

Alexander Ovechkin to Record Over 3.5 Shots (+110, BetMGM)

Alexander Ovechkin is one of the most prolific goal scorers in NHL history, thought he’s in a bit of a dry spell. He’s registered just one goal in his last six games and two goals in his last eleven games. However, his inability to find the back of the net hasn’t stopped him from ripping the puck on net. In Washington’s 5-1 loss to the Bruins, Ovechkin took a season-high eight shots. He’s averaging 6.3 shots per game over his last three games and has registered four or more shots in 11 of his last 14 games overall. In Washington’s first matchup against the Flyers this season, Ovechkin netted two goals on four shots to go with two assists.

Sean Couturier to Record Over 0.5 Point (-143, DraftKings)

Reigning Selke Trophy winner Sean Couturier was held off the scoresheet for the first time all season -not including the second game of the season which saw injury take him out after just 45 seconds of action- in a 4-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Couturier has 13 points to his credit in 10 full games this season.

As Couturier goes, so go the Flyers. It’s worth noting that in the only game between Philadelphia and Washington this season, Couturier found the back of the net twice and recorded an assist. If you think he’ll record two or more points, DraftKings Sportsbook has that listed at +300 odds.
