Flyers vs. Rangers Betting Pick (March 17, 2021)
The Philadelphia Flyers broke a two-game losing streak on Monday night with a wild 5-4 overtime victory. Philadelphia desperately needed a win against the Blueshirts on Monday night and while some of the team’s usual concerns reared their ugly heads, the Flyers moved to 14-9-3 on the season, just three points behind the Boston Bruins for the fourth seed in the East Division with a game in hand. Not only that, but the Flyers have three games in hand over the Penguins (3rd place) and Capitals (1st place), as well as four in hand over the Islanders (2nd place).
Carter Hart got the nod in Monday night’s contest after Brian Elliott struggled to close out last week. While Hart’s final stat line of 4 goals allowed on 24 shots might appear to indicate a continued struggle, it’s worth noting that his defense hung him out to dry on at least three of those goals.

The Rangers’ overtime loss dropped them to 1-3-1 in their last five games games, bringing them to 11-12-4 on the season. Artemi Panarin kept up his scoring ways against the Orange & Black, finding the back of the net once and dishing out two assists in the game. Colin Blackwell and Julien Gauthier also lit the lamp in the first of two meetings in three nights between these teams. The Rangers are expected to change things up in net, giving Alexander Georgiev the start in this one.

Bets We Like With a Flyers Win
Money Puck gives the Flyers a 55.9% chance of winning this game. Meanwhile, Philadelphia’s implied win probability based on the moneyline is slightly lower at 54%.
Flyers Win and Over 5.5 Goals (+185, DraftKings Sportsbook)
Most sportsbooks have established the total goals market in this game at 6, but we’d recommend hedging a bit by putting a total of six goals back in play at slightly less lucrative odds. The Flyers’ goaltending situation has been that of a nightmare to say the least. 22-year-old netminder Carter Hart hasn’t looked comfortable through large stretches of this season and 35-year-old backup Brian Elliott’s excellent run came to an end as he was called upon in a number of games in Hart’s stead a week ago. As such, the Flyers have seen some crooked numbers on the final scoresheet:
- 3/2/21 @ PIT: 5-2
- 3/4/21 @ PIT: 4-3
- 3/6/21 @ PIT: 4-3
- 3/7/21 v. WSH: 3-1
- 3/9/21 v. BUF: 5-4 (SO)
- 3/11/21 v. WSH: 5-3
- 3/13/21 v. WSH: 5-4
- 3/15/21 @ NYR: 5-4 (OT)
The final score has gone hit at least eight goals in each of their last four games and nine in three of those four. At some point that number is going to have to come back down. Although Alexander Georgiev has had an underwhelming season with a 3.33 GAA and .887 SV%, he’s done well in five career games agains the Flyers, posting a .918 SV% and a 2.39 GAA. Philadelphia is averaging just over four goals per game in their last four contests and while we expect Georgiev to play better than Keith Kinkead a game ago, the Flyers will still find the back of the net. Hedging the total down a bit puts a 4-2 result back into play, which could be a valuable outcome as the Flyers should skate away with their second win in three nights.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome
Artemi Panarin to Score a Goal (+200, FOX Bet)
Artemi Panarin was off to a solid start for the Rangers this season before having to take time away from the team as allegations came out about his potential involvement in a physical assault in Russia years ago, which both Panarin and the Rangers have publicly denounced.
Since returning, Panarin recorded an assist in a victory over the Boston Bruins and followed it up with a three-point performance (1 G, 2A) against the Flyers in an overtime loss. Panarin has been a thorn in the Flyers’ side since coming into the league, as he’s racked up 24 points in 17 games in his career against Philadelphia. Given his recent form and Philadelphia’s issues on the back end and in net, +200 odds on Panarin to score a goal anytime in this game is solid value.

Sean Couturier to Record Over 0.5 Assist (+120, BetMGM)
In 15 full games he’s played this season, reigning Selke Trophy winner Sean Couturier has racked up 19 points. He’s now up to twelve assists in his last fourteen games and has recorded at least one assist in five consecutive games.
You could certainly hedge a bit by getting in on Couturier to record a point of any kind at -160 odds, but he’s played more of a facilitating role than a goalscoring one as of late. Either way, it’s worth laying some money on a player market that continues to pay out game after game.
Flyers vs. Rangers Prediction
Pick: While the Rangers are likely going to come out aggressive early to avenge their 5-4 overtime defeat, the Flyers should be able to assert themselves as the better overall team. If Philadelphia can get even an average game from their defensemen and goalie, they should pull this one out. Take the Flyers to Win and Over 5.5 Goals. Also, get in on Sean Couturier to record an assist.
