We’ve done about 6,000 posts at Crossing Broad over the last three years, and maybe two of them mentioned Drexel basketball.

It’s not that we’re anti-Dragons, it’s just that they sit on the periphery of the Philadelphia sporting spectrum. We’re a 4-for-4 town with parochial college basketball interests, and when you take a look at the City 6, Drexel hasn’t done much of anything in recent years. They haven’t had a winning season since 2014, when Bruiser Flint and Damion Lee were still in the picture.

But take that recent history and put it straight in the bagster, because Tuesday night Drexel plays for a NCAA Tournament berth. Seriously. The Dragons haven’t gone dancing since 1996, when Philly native Malik Rose was leading the charge.

About a month ago, Drexel was 8-7 and facing a long layoff. They had just lost to Hofstra and went on to see their next four games cancelled, leaving them idle for 19 days. But they came out of the break with a huge win at James Madison, entered the CAA tournament as a #6 seed, and then proceeded to beat the Charleston and Northeastern in consecutive days, setting up tonight’s finale against Elon on a neutral floor. The Phoenix are on a seven-game winning streak and dispatched the #1 seed JMU en route to the title game.

So yeah, here we are. #6 Drexel vs. #8 Elon for a NCAA tournament berth. Crazy.

If the Dragons get it done, they’ll join Villanova as the only local representatives in the big dance, assuming Temple doesn’t go on some similarly miraculous tournament run. Drexel would be a feel good story, and with Collin Gillespie’s injury, unfortunately Nova’s postseason comes with a hopeless and deflating feeling, so maybe it falls on the Dragons to be this year’s underdog. A fun, objective, enjoyable storyline for neutral fans who want to see Zach Spiker’s squad make a run.

As Larry the Cable Guy said, let’s git r done. Go Dragons.
