Nobody should give a shit if Jalen Hurts is or is not named the  Eagles’ starting quarterback in April.

We’re more than four months away from the season opener and haven’t even done the draft yet. There are no OTA workouts because the Birds opted out, and instead we’re doing more virtual stuff as we try to get a handle on COVID-19.

Alas, Howie Roseman, Andy Weidl, and Nick Sirianni were asked on Wednesday if Jalen Hurts is the starting quarterback right now, and this is what Sirianni said:

“To name any starters at this particular time, we’ve been working with these guys for two days. Right? My biggest thing is competition. We’ve talked a little bit about my core values and that’s my second core value. It’s this team’s second core value. Competition is a huge thing and we’re going to have competition at every position.”

The reason the question is asked is because we’re trying to get a feel for whether or not the Eagles think Hurts is the guy. We know we’re not gonna get a straight answer, but we’re looking for little hints and trying to read between the lines to see if they let something slip. Maybe a quarterback is in play for the coming draft. We don’t know, so we pry a little bit, and good on Jeff McLane for pushing for an answer to the question.

The only problem is that you have some people who give these dumb reactions, like “they refuse to commit to Hurts!” or something lame like that. That’s total nonsense. We wouldn’t expect a second-year player, who started four games as a rookie, to just be handed the starting job in 2021, would we? Hurts hasn’t done anything to earn the gig. Carson Wentz played himself OUT of the job, and now he’s in Indianapolis. We didn’t end up in this situation because Hurts lit the world on fire, we ended up here because Wentz stunk up the joint and then got traded.

Some people seem to think it helps the guy mentally, to name him the starter, which is hogwash. It’s total malarkey, as Joe Biden might say. We’re talking about a dude who got benched in Alabama, battled with Tua, then played a great season in Oklahoma after transferring. He’s been through the wringer when it comes to competition in every phase of his career, so I have zero doubts that he’ll come into camp with a great mindset and attitude. There is healthy competition and unhealthy competition, and right now Flacco/Hurts is the former, not the latter. When they add another QB, we’ll see, but right now the situation is 100% tenable. It’s fine.

Any concerns about the Eagles not naming Jalen Hurts the starter in April constitute a nothing burger. You take the Big Mac, remove the cheese, put the lettuce and tomato off to the side, and get rid of the disgusting condiments (ketchup/mayo etc, it’s all gross).

This Jalen Hurts story is merely bread.
