The Philadelphia 76ers head on the road for two games in Washington D.C. against the host Wizards. Philly gained a 2-0 series lead with a dominant Game 2 performance that was overshadowed a bit by Russell Westbrook’s early departure due to an ankle injury and ensuing fan incident.

Let’s take a closer look at the Sixers vs. Wizards Game 3 odds and make some picks and predictions for this May 29, 2021 matchup.

Westbrook’s status for Game 3 remains in question, but whether or not he is in uniform tonight, the Wizards have a tough road ahead to get back into this series. The Sixers have won all five meetings with the Wizards this season, including a 26-point thumping in the lone meeting on Washington’s home court back in March. Dating back to last season, Philly has now rattled off seven straight wins against Washington and finds itself a 6-6.5 point favorites in most legal online sportsbooks.

The current total of 227.5 in most locations is the lowest these two have seen in any game this season, which one might find curious with four of the five meetings reaching 220 points or more, including two that reached 243 and 277.

What does the 0-2 hole at home with a questionable Westbrook mean for the Wizards’ chances tonight? Will the desperate home team’s high-scoring tendencies lead to a shootout tonight?

2nd Quarter Moneyline – Washington Wizards (FanDuel Sportsbook +134)

This is incredible value here for a desperate home team in a quarter during which they generally excel. If Washington expects to steal one here at home, they would be wise to take lessons from the other Game 3s so far in these NBA Playoffs where one team led the series 2-0. The Heat lost their Game 3 at home to go down 0-3 to the Bucks in a game where they lost the second quarter 23-22. Interestingly, last night, the Celtics and Clippers both got back into their respective series with Game 3 victories that each saw the victor win the second quarter.

Boston and Los Angeles (as well as Miami) stumbled out of the gates in Game 3, which is a viable possibility for Washington tonight, too. Being over-amped in front of the home crowd, coming out tight due to the immense pressure of the spot, or just running into a Sixers team that has started games superbly for nearly a month now, are all reasons the first quarter might not go as planned for Washington.

However, there is considerable empirical evidence to suggest the team will have gotten its act together by the second stanza tonight.

For starters, despite being 0-5 against Philadelphia this season, Washington has managed to score 33 or more points in all five second quarters. In fact, they only lost two of those five second quarters and won the second 38-31 in the only game on this court, despite losing that one by 26 points.

In fact, prior to this season, the Wizards also won each of the last three second quarters against the Sixers on this court, beating them by 10, 18, and 17 points in the second during those meetings.

This prop wager gets even more enticing when you consider Washington’s recent form in the second 12-minute chunk of games here at Capital One Arena. The team has won seven straight second quarters at home, allowing 30 points in just one of those quarters while topping 30 points themselves five times.

They averaged 33.3 points per quarter in that stretch, while allowing just 25.1 points per game, good for better than an eight-point margin of victory.

With Washington repeatedly having proven they will put up 30 or more in the second quarter both against the Sixers and at home, this seems to be the perfect spot to hammer the Wizards and get a terrific return on investment.

One more thing. This season, the second quarter was the Wizards’ highest scoring quarter on average (30.0 points) and the Sixers worst defensive quarter (28.4 points allowed). That was over a point worse than the Sixers’ next worst defensive quarter and more than three points worse than their best defensive quarter.

Sixers vs. Wizards Game 3 Pick

I feel the casual bettor will have seen enough to be all-in on the 76ers tonight to bury the Wizards. While Philly may do just that, we cannot ignore what we see as fantastic value in a generous spotting of points to the home team here.

The headlines might read that Philly has won all five head-to-head meetings with Washington this season, making it seven straight victories over the Wizards. However, what gets glossed over is that Washington actually covered the spread in three of those five losses. In fact, they have now covered four of the last six and six of the last nine against the Sixers, despite winning just two of those games straight up. In fact, three of the five Washington losses to Philly this season came by seven points or less, which is the best line currently available for tonight’s game.

Diving into some relevant stats and trends, the Sixers covered just five of their 13 games as favorites of 5-7 points this season (38.5%), while Washington was tremendous as dogs of 5-7 points, covering 10 of 13 tries (76.9%). In fact, Washington has played with a chip on their shoulders all season long as big underdogs. They covered 20 of 28 spreads as dogs of 5-12 points (71.4%).

When Philly was laying that 5-7 points on the road this season, they were just 2-5 straight up and covered just one of those spreads. In fact, they failed to cover a single spread of 5-7 on the road against sub .500 teams all season long. Washington was quite the opposite as home dogs of 5-7 points, as they not only covered five of the seven games they played in that role but also won all five of those games outright.

It is also true that the Wizards covered eight of their 11 home games as dogs of five points or more.

Philadelphia was the East’s best team and Washington was a sub .500 group that snuck into this series. However, Philly was just 20-16 away from home this season, while Washington was 20-17 here on its home court. The Wizards also had an above .500 cover mark at home, while the Sixers had a sub .500 road cover record. Philly has now failed to cover four of its last five away games at teams with above .500 home records.

We are encouraged by Washington’s 20-13 ATS record against above .500 teams this season, including eight covers in its last nine opportunities in that role. In fact, they have covered four of their last five against above .600 teams. The Wizards are also 4-2 ATS on two days of rest, which is quite a contrast to this Sixers team which has covered just one of its last five games on two days of rest.

Game 3 Prediction

Washington has been a dependable bounce back team down the stretch, as it has now covered five straight games after an ATS loss and have lost just once ATS in its last nine games after a straight up loss.

It’s going to be hard to beat the value you get here with seven points for a home dog that has covered six of its last seven games when getting points and five of its last seven overall at home. Take the generous spot here and watch the Wizards cover their fifth game in the last six head-to-head as the home team against the Sixers.

Our Pick: Washington +7 (FanDuel Sportsbook -114)
