Joel Embiid made the All-NBA second team, and that comes with contract ramifications.

Bobby Marks broke it down on Twitter:

Embiid is in the middle of a five-year deal that pays him $148 million. This year he hit the cap around 29 million and the number goes up to 31 million next year and 33 million the following year. The deal expires at the end of the 2022-2023 season, with Embiid being 29 years old.

If they went with the Supermax scenario Marks shares above, it would take Joel to age 33. The short version is that his money would start at 35% of the cap and then increase by eight percent annually. We can’t see into the future and determine what the cap is going to look like, hence the projected number.

The other thing we can’t determine is Joel’s long-term health. He’s dealing with the meniscus thing right now, and the last thing you want is to have a broken down Embiid on the books for a ton of money as he enters his 30s. That’s a calculated risk you have to look at while considering that Embiid is the best player this franchise has seen since the days of Moses Malone and Dr. J.

For some context here, Ben Simmons is on a max deal that carries him to the end of 2024-2025 season. Tobias Harris is in year two of that 5 yr/$180 million. Danny Green’s $15m comes off the books after this postseason and Seth Curry is locked in at eight million for two more seasons.
