On Twitter, Steve Cohen Wonders Why His Team Stinks
If there’s a silver lining for the Phillies being just an average team this year, it’s that the New York Mets absolutely stink.
They got a fancy new owner, signed James McCann, traded for Francisco Lindor, and were supposed to mop up the division. But life comes at you fast, and the Mets are now 59-60 and third place in the NL East after losing five in a row.
That has Steve Cohen wondering what’s wrong with his team:
It’s hard to understand how professional hitters can be this unproductive. The best teams have a more disciplined approach. The slugging and OPS numbers don’t lie.

This is like a phone call to WFAN, but in tweet format. It’s like John from Queens called up Mike Francesa to complain about the Mets.
People are mostly ripping Cohen for this, saying the Tweet is unproductive, and maybe it is. The owner bitching about his team on social media might not exactly motivate these guys to play harder or put them in a better head space to perform. It can have a negative effect.
But at the same time, Cohen is showing that he gives a shit. We’ve had plenty of absentee owners in this town who are just sort of bouncing around to various mansions and only paying half-attention. At least Cohen is showing that he’s invested in his team and cares about the results, and Mets fans should probably be bolstered by the fact that he’s acting like one of them.
