From Schefty:

They also released Nick Mullens.

Immediate thoughts:

  1. Giving up a conditional sixth rounder is nothing. Much better than whatever people were saying they should give the Bears for Nick Foles.
  2. Minshew is still on his rookie deal and doesn’t even hit the cap at one million dollars. He was a 6th round draft pick a few years ago.
  3. The reason he became available is because Jacksonville committed their future to Trevor Lawrence. C.J. Beathard is now their number 2.
  4. Minshew is a clear upgrade over both Joe Flacco and Nick Mullens, but the Eagles gave $3.5 million to Flacco, so whomever ends up being QB3 is gonna feel slighted.
  5. Minshew is not coming here to replace Jalen Hurts, but of course people are gonna be calling for Minshew when Hurts struggles. I wouldn’t blow that out of proportion, though. Fans will call for whoever the backup is when the starter struggled.
  6. Minshew has the goofy facial hair and whatnot, and he’s the kind of character that will fit in well here. He’s got that quirky and charismatic personality. Good quote too, which is good for sports blogs.

Seems like a good move overall. This is not the same as committing to Carson Wentz and then drafting a QB in the second round. This is buying low on a guy who found himself out of favor in Jacksonville. If he puts some pressure on Hurts, so be it, but the bottom line is that the QB group of Hurts/Flacco/Minshew is exponentially better than Hurts/Flacco/Mullens.

Enjoy your weekend.
