The Best Eagles vs. Lions Player Props Picks

T.J. Hockenson Anytime Touchdown Scorer

Tight ends have been living the good life against the Eagles over the last five weeks in terms of getting into the end zone. Since Week 3, tight ends have caught a touchdown pass against the Eagles in every game, with Dalton Schultz scoring twice for the Cowboys back in September.

There is little reason to think this trend changes here, as T.J. Hockenson is one of the most talented tight ends the Eagles have faced this season. Hockenson started hot out of the gate, scoring in both of the Lions’ first two games, but he has not hit paydirt since. However, he is the focal point of the Detroit passing game, along with running back D’Andre Swift, and the two are clearly quarterback Jared Goff’s favorite targets.

Hockenson has been targeted 53 times already this season, catching 38 passes. He has seen Goff throw his way at least eight times in five of his team’s seven games, including 9 and 11 targets in Weeks 6 and 7, respectively.

The Iowa product leads the team in targets and is second only to Swift in receptions and yards. Detroit’s top tight end had a team high in targets four times and receptions three times already this season.

Hockenson is tied for the team lead in receiving touchdowns with two and had touchdown catches in six different games last season. Currently sitting 19th in the NFL in targets (third amongst tight ends), you can expect him to have several opportunities to score in this one against a defense that has been a weekly victim of tight ends.

Jared Goff Over 0.5 Interceptions

While the Eagles have looked lost defensively more often than not, giving up 28 or more points in four of their last five games, they have remained an opportunistic bunch. After failing to intercept a pass in the first three weeks of the season, Philly has responded by picking off at least one pass in each of its last four games, despite playing three of the league’s top passers in that stretch.

Jared Goff could likely become the next victim of this run, as he has thrown six picks already on the year, including at least one in five of the team’s seven games. Moreover, he has thrown four interceptions in the team’s last three outings, with at least one in each game.

That is bound to happen when you are throwing the ball nearly 40 times a game. Goff has 274 pass attempts already this season, trailing just Tom Brady and Patrick Mahomes for the most in the league.

Somehow, Philadelphia’s pass defense has been pretty solid all year, at least in terms of yardage allowed. Currently, it sits No. 11 in passing yards allowed per game. The unit has also been thrown against the 11th least times per game (33.4 attempts against), but that number has spiked over the last three games in which opponents have thrown 37.7 passes per game.

With Goff attempting at least 35 passes in six of his seven games in 2021, it’s hard to imagine that number dipping this week.

Even on a Los Angeles team contending for a Super Bowl last season, Goff threw 13 interceptions during the regular season, including nine in the team’s final eight games leading up to the playoffs.

It should happen again here against an Eagles defense tied for the third most picks in the NFL over the last three weeks. After all, it’s hard to argue with Philly’s fifth-best ranking over the last three games in terms of opponent interception percentage (4.42%).

Dallas Goedert Under 3.5 Receptions

This is a scary one on the surface, for sure, but you should be able to find this prop paying out upwards of +150, a fantastic return on a prop bet with a solid backbone behind it.

Remember, Dallas Goedert is now the only show in town for the Eagles at tight end. Zach Ertz has been shipped off to Arizona, so he will now be facing opposing teams’ best cover option against tight ends.

In an offense as pass heavy as Philadelphia’s has been this season, it interestingly only averages 34.7 pass attempts per game, just 18th most in the league. That’s because the Eagles run the seventh least amount plays in the NFL. And with Jalen Hurts not being an incredibly accurate passer, the Birds complete just 21.1 passes per game, the tenth least in the league. That number has dipped dramatically in the team’s last three games, as well, to just 17.3 completions per game, the second least of any team during that stretch.

What is the likelihood that Goedert catches four or more of those 18-21 passes the Eagles seem destined to complete this week?

Well, he is only averaging three catches per game on the season, reaching four receptions just twice and never seeing more than five targets. So, now he is boxed into a window where his team is likely capped around 20 total catches. He maxes out with what, then, six targets? Can you bank on him to catch four balls with that small a margin of error?

We don’t believe so and, at the price the under affords you, it’s surely worth the small risk.

Enhancing our belief even further is how quietly impressive Detroit’s defense has been against tight ends this season. Only two tight ends have scored a touchdown against the Lions in 2021, despite the team allowing 21 offensive touchdowns already.

More directly relevant to us here, Detroit has not allowed any tight end to catch more than five balls all season. The Lions have faced George Kittle, Robert Tonyan, and Mark Andrews already, and still, opposing teams’ top tight ends are averaging just 3.3 catches and 4.6 targets per game.

In fact, Detroit has already held four of their opponents’ best tight ends to just three targets, not even enough to cash this prop if they caught every ball thrown their way.

Goedert, despite being the main guy at tight end for the Eagles now, may struggle for receptions in this one. Take the value that comes with the under here.
