On Tuesday night, the Philadelphia Flyers (4-2-1) return home from a three-game road trip to host the Arizona Coyotes (0-8-1) at the Wells Fargo Center. The Flyers have gotten off to a good start to the season – their last game, a 4-0 defeat in Calgary aside – but the Coyotes have been as bad as their record would indicate. They could be the worst team in hockey in a long, long time.

Let’s get into our Flyers vs. Coyotes betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this November 2, 2021 matchup.

Flyers-Coyotes Preview

After getting off to a torrid offensive start, leading the NHL in scoring through their first five games, the Flyers have just two goals in their last two games and haven’t scored in five periods.

In most instances, this would be a cause for concern, but with Arizona coming into town, the Flyers should be able to get the offense back on track.

How bad are the Coyotes?

Arizona averages 1.44 goals scored per game. That’s worst in the NHL. They average allowing 4.22 goals per game. That’s also worst in the NHL. They have only killed 58.6 percent of their shorthanded situations which is, yep, last in the NHL. And their power play has scored just 8.0 percent of the time which is…. NOT last in the NHL. Instead, it’s next to last.

Woof.

Arizona’s top defenseman Jacob Chychrun is already minus-15. While Plus/minus is not a great stat measurement, the fact that he’s been on the ice for 15 more goals against than scored at even strength (or while his team had a power play) through just nine games, is almost unfathomable. Clayton Keller leads the team in goals with three and former Flyer Shayne Gostisbehere leads the team in points with five – all assists.

We don’t really like Arizona at all. Seriously. This is not a bet we would truly promote under any circumstance other than this one…

Since it’s tough to lay heavy wood like -225 (BetMGM) on the Flyers to win a regular season hockey game (although we find a way to flip those odds a bit below), it’s never a bad idea to back up that kind of a bet with a long-shot bet that could serve as a hedge to the initial bet if it loses.

Look, Arizona isn’t going to lose all 82 games this season. Eventually they will have to win, and when they do, it’s going to be a big payday for someone who bets them. And you could make an argument that unless Carter Hart does another acrobat’s job in net like he did against Calgary Saturday, the Coyotes could score a few goals and end up winning by two with an empty-netter.

If this was last season’s Flyers, we’d say this is a value bet for Arizona. But this Philadelphia team is improved in so many areas, specifically poise, and we don’t see it happening. But…

Arizona plays no defense. The Flyers want to get their offense back on track and feel like this is an opponent they can do that against. If the Coyotes take penalties, they have the worst penalty kill going against a solid Flyers power play that clicks on 23.8 percent of their chances. Oh, and if you want a weird trend – the last eight Flyers games played on a Tuesday have gone over the goal total.

It’s hard to explain why that is, other than to say that there aren’t a lot of Sunday or Monday games scheduled in the NHL, so it gives coaches a chance to implement some new wrinkles in time for a Tuesday game… maybe? Either way, it’s just a trend bonus on top of what we believe will be an easy win parlay for you.

There were a half dozen players we could have picked here, but we went with JVR because he had the best return on investment. As we mentioned, Arizona’s penalty kill is beyond terrible. Meanwhile, van Riemsdyk is the net-front presence on the Flyers top power play unit. That makes a lot of sense. Secondarily, if the Flyers blow out the Coyotes – and we think they will – there will be a lot more shifts for the third and  fourth lines than usual, as the Flyers will look to keep some of their top scorers fresh with another road trip coming against rivals Pittsburgh and Washington later this week. As such, van Riemsdyk will get more ice time and more of a chance to score.

Really though, there are good odds on several Flyers to score in this game at DraftKings. Cam Atkinson and Sean Couturier are both +165, Travis Konecny is +175, Claude Giroux is +180 and Joel Farabee is +190. You really can’t go wrong with any of them.

Flyers vs. Coyotes Prediction

The Coyotes have to win eventually, but not tonight. Maybe Saturday when they finally return home from a 12-day, six city road trip to host the expansion Seattle Kraken. And although they’ve been better defensively in their last two losses to Washington and Carolina, we don’t expect that to hold up well against the Flyers puck possession-dominant style.

Pick: We never pick a team to score six goals. Except tonight. Flyers 6, Coyotes 2.
