On Tuesday night, the Philadelphia Flyers (7-4-2) kick off a three-game homestand against the Calgary Flames (8-3-4) at Wells Fargo Center. It’s the second and final meeting between the two teams. The Flames shut out Philadelphia 4-0 when the Flyers visited Calgary on Oct. 30.

Flyers-Flames Preview

The Flyers continue to struggle offensively, having scored just 13 goals in their last eight games (4-3-1). The fact that they have nine points in those eight games is a testament to their strong defense and even better goaltending to this point in the season.

However, Ryan Ellis, their top offseason acquisition, is injured again. He returned to the lineup Saturday in Dallas and reinjured his lower body injury (believed to be of the hip/groin/abdominal variety) that had kept him out of action for the previous 11 games. Ellis is now considered week-to-week in his recovery and was placed on injured reserve today. Nick Seeler, who has filled in admirably for the Flyers on blue line, was recalled today under emergency conditions.

Still, the Flyers need to get the offense going. Kevin Hayes made his season debut Saturday and his return will now bump locker room favorite Oskar Lindblom to the scratch list, at least for one game as the Flyers look to get back to scoring with more regularity.

Meanwhile, Calgary is off to a strong start out West. Like the Flyers, the Flames have been getting incredible goaltending. Jacob Markstrom has four shutouts already, including one against the Flyers. Meanwhile, Andrew Mangiapane continues to be a stalwart goal scorer, leading the Flames with 10 goals, which is tied for sixth-best in the NHL wit, among others, Edmonton superstar Connor McDavid.

Didn’t see this one coming, did you? Here’s the skinny – the Flyers are having a pre-game ceremony tonight. What does that have to do with anything? Well, there’s something to be said for a team sitting on the bench for a half hour watching former greats getting inducted into the team hall of fame. They get crampy. They get itchy. They get annoyed. And it can lead to disjointed play. Look for the Flames to stay back in the locker room, and then come out of the gates like a bundle of energy. Carter Hart may keep the Flyers in the game with more strong goaltending, but we don’t like the Flyers sitting around for a half hour before things get started. In addition, the Flames have covered the puck line in five straight games following a road win. Plus, you can get great value here. Definitely worth a shot.

The Flyers have been leaning heavily on their top line for scoring during this drought, and they have come through to a degree. There no reason to expect them to not generate chances at home against the Flames. If they are going to pull of this win, it’s likely going to be this line (which also includes Travis Konecny, (who is -134), to come through with the offense needed to win. Couturier will get the most ice time of the three, and therefore should register at least one point at decent value, although Giroux is equally valuable.

Flyers vs. Flames Prediction

Until the Flyers can start generating offense again, it’s going to be tough to pick them to win games against teams with very good defense, goaltending or both. Calgary is one of those teams. As such, expect this one to be low-scoring, and maybe even slink into overtime, where the Flyers will tell you that played a very good game at even strength and just need to get rewarded to get a better outcome. But, they’ll be happy to come away with at least one point in a non-conference game against a tough opponent.

Prediction: Flames 3, Flyers 2 (SO)
