Flyers-Hurricanes Preview

The Flyers are coming off a dispiriting 3-0 loss at home to Toronto on Wednesday where the offense couldn’t generate much in the way of high percentage scoring chances. They got shots on goal, but most were from a distance and there were very few second chance opportunities.

Carter Hart played well in net as the Flyers continue to get strong goaltending and are playing solid team defense. But the offense has dried up. The second line of Cam Atkinson, Derick Brassard and Joel Farabee suddenly can’t score, so head coach Alain Vigneault flipped Farabee down to the third line and moved the equally struggling Oskar Lindblom up to the second unit.

The Flyers power play has also been poor of late, so expect a new look there as well against Carolina.

As for the Hurricanes, what’s not to like about the way Rod Brid’Amour has his team playing? They are averaging 3.73 goals per game, which ranks third in the NHL and are allowing just 1.91 goals per game, tops in the NHL. They are also the best faceoff team in the league (the Flyers are No. 2) and Carolina sports both a top 10 power play and penalty kill unit.

They are coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime win in Tampa, bouncing back from their lone loss of the season in Florida last Saturday.

If the Flyers are going to generate offense against Carolina, they’re going to need their best players to put the puck in the net. The line swtich of Farabee and Lindblom seems more cosmetic than anything, so it’s going to fall at the feet of Claude Giroux, Sean Couturier and Travis Konecny.

While Giroux has been looking to shoot more this season, he’s still a playmaker, so you should bet him like one. You might be able to find good value bets for him to score a goal, but take the point and be happy.

Throw in the trend that the Flyers have won each of the past five games as an underdog coming off a loss and this could turn out to a be a truly great bet for you.

Carolina is a very good puck possession team and as a result, they get a lot of scoring chances. And when they do, they tend to win games. The Hurricanes are 8-0-0 this season when outshooting their opponent, and to outshoot the Flyers, you’re going to need to get into the 30s at least. Teams are doing that against the Flyers this season with a little more regularity, only to run into hot goaltending.

Still, getting 34 shots on goal seems like a gimme for Carolina, as that is the team average for the season and the Flyers average allowing 33 themselves, and haven’t faced as many high caliber opponents like Carolina. Take this one to the bank early.

Goaltending has been the biggest strength for the Flyers this season and it’s found a way to keep them in games. Expect a high number of shots, as we mentioned above, but count on the goalie to play well enough to make this a game. Hart needs 30 saves to win the bet for you. He’s reached that plateau in six of his eight starts. We think this will be just another day at the office for Hart.

Flyers vs. Hurricanes Prediction

The Flyers look poised to get both Ryan Ellis and Kevin Hayes back on this road trip, which is good news. Just don’t expect to see them tonight. Word out of the Flyers locker room is the two veterans will be back tomorrow in Dallas. The Flyers could use an infusion of talent from those guys returning against Carolina, but instead will give it a go with the same roster that couldn’t score against Toronto and has only seven goals in the last five games overall. Carolina can’t keep up the pace of winning 10-of-11, but they should find another two points in their ledger after this one.

Prediction: Hurricanes 4, Flyers 2
