On Thursday night, the Philadelphia Flyers (8-4-2) welcome the defending Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning (8-3-3) to town. It is the first of three meetings between the teams this season.

Flyers-Lightning Preview

The Flyers have been alternating wins and losses for the better part of three weeks now, but have not lost back-to-back games all season.

However, they are coming off a win, another nail biter, 2-1 in overtime against the Calgary Flames. Cam Atkinson scored the game-winner. Kevin Hayes also scored in  he game. It was his first goal of the season in just his second game after two offseason abdominal surgeries. The Flyers offense continues to struggle, scoring just 13 goals in the last nine games. However, they somehow have figured out a way to have a winning record in those games, going 5-3-1.

Meanwhile, the Lightning don’t look as dominant as they have been in the past three seasons which included two Stanley Cup titles and one regular season with the best record in the history of the sport, and yet, despite the fact that they seem almost human, they still have registered at least one point in 11 of 14 games.

Tampa lacks the grittiness in the bottom six that made them such a complete team in seasons before. But, they still have a wealth of top end talent, led by Steven Stamkos, who has eight goals thus far this season.

This is a tough matchup for the Flyers to win with how the offense has been going, but if they are going to beatr the Lightning, they’re going to need some scoring from throughout the lineup. Hayes has a goal and an assist so far in his two games back for the Flyers, and he tends to be a streaky points producer.

With that in mind, if Hayes can score a goal, it’s very likely the Flyers will win the game. They are 28-3-2 over parts of three seasons when Hayes scores a goal. They were 19-0-2 in 2019-20, then 8-3-0 last season and are 1-0-0 so far this season.

The Lightning come in to Philadelphia playing some really good hockey. They are 6-0-2 in their last eight game s and have outscored their opponents by nearly double (27-14). The only losses were both low scoring, tight-checking affairs, a style the Flyers do like to play. But if Tampa can get on the score board early, the Flyers could be in trouble. They have only won two games all season in which they’ve trailed.

On top of that, the Flyers have failed to cover the puck line in six consecutive games coming off an overtime win, meaning this team sets itself up for a letdown.

Look for the Flyers to keep it close, but Tampa to earn that cover with an empty-netter.

The Flyers have lost the first period in their last six games (played at night) following an overtime win, which means they struggle to maintain momentum from one game to the next.

Flyers vs. Lightning Prediction

Tampa gets an early lead. Philadelphia chases. The Flyers will still stay in the game, but the reality is Tampa has too much firepower. We see a goal each for Brayden Point, Alex Killorn and Steven Stamkos. Carter Hart has been great for the Flyers, but this is one he won’t be able to pull the rabbit out of the hat.
