On Tuesday night, the Philadelphia 76ers will be in Utah to play the Jazz. The Sixers have lost four in a row and are moving precipitously toward .500 after starting the season 8-2. The Jazz are 8-5 after losing to the Miami Heat in Utah on Saturday night.

Let’s get into our Sixers vs. Jazz betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this November 16, 2021 matchup.

Sixers vs. Jazz Betting Pick (November 16, 2021)

One of our least favorite phrases around here is “that line is telling you something.” As in, “the Eagles were only getting a point and a half in Denver last weekend, that line was telling you they were the side.” It gets worse, of course, when as with that Eagles game, they blow the Broncos out of the stadium. “See…that was obvious, that was easy money, you missed out.”

This is, of course, nonsense. What that line was actually telling you in that Eagles game was that neither of those teams was any good. The Broncos were 5-4, but with the exception of their inexplicable win over the Dallas Cowboys, their wins had mostly come against average-to-bad teams. The Eagles are now 4-6, and because the NFC is so weak this season, and because there are 17 games in the schedule, people around here are talking themselves into a 9-8 record and a wild card even though it’s far more likely that they’ll win three of their last seven games and miss the playoffs. The Eagles-Broncos line only told you that there was no compelling reason to believe in either of those teams.

And so, having made a pretty compelling argument that the whole “that line is telling you something” thing is preposterous…um…the line is telling you something in this Sixers/Jazz game.

The Sixers are 8-6. The Jazz are (is?) 8-5. The game is in Utah, but the neither the Sixers nor the Jazz have played since Saturday. Both teams will be rested. The Jazz and the Sixers both suffered their most recent loss to the same sub-.500 Indiana Pacers team. Should be a reasonably even contest right?

Nope. The Sixers are getting 10 points.

And yeah, the Sixers are still without Joel Embiid and Matisse Thybulle. Danny Green will also be out with a left hamstring issue. But the Sixers will basically have the same lineup that beat the New York Knicks eight days ago.

What the line is telling you is what you already knew. The Sixers couldn’t survive playing backups for extended periods of time much longer than a week or so. The accumulated toll of those minutes is showing. Until the Sixers get Embiid back – and until they either convince Ben Simmons to play or get a useful player or players back in a trade for him – the Sixers are the equivalent of a .500 team. Utah is normally pretty heavily favored against .500 teams at home.

As you can imagine, we have included this item as a pick for most of the recent past in this serial piece because the Sixers generally have been either favored to win or at least thought to be able to keep the game close. The Sixers have not been on the wrong end of many double digit lines in the past few seasons. They are tonight, though, and these odds are wild as a result. Whatever your normal unit is, maybe halve or quarter it for this bet. Basically, if the Sixers are going to win this game, they’re going to have to hope for a brutal shooting night from the Jazz. On current form, the Sixers aren’t likely to run anyone out of the gym.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Donovan Mitchell Over 26.5 Points (-120, Caesars Sportsbook)

Donovan Mitchell is the leading scorer for the Jazz, and at 25.6 points per game, he has shown a consistent ability to put up high point totals. There are two low-key but crucial factors supporting this selection. The first is that the Sixers have no elite defender to deal with Mitchell in this game. Simmons and Thybulle would normally have been tasked with containing Mitchell and neither of them are playing. The second is that Mitchell has a small score to settle with the Sixers from last season. Look for him to toss up 30 or more tonight.

Mike Conley Over 12.5 Points (-120, FOX Bet)

The Sixers have asked a lot of Tyrese Maxey in the absence of Simmons, and Maxey has delivered. Maxey is scoring the ball with regularity and he is taking care of the ball too, all while playing a staggering number of minutes per game. If there is any mild criticism of Maxey, it has to be his defense. His defensive rating, defined as the number of points he gives up per 100 possessions, is a whopping 114.7. Maxey isn’t going to be matched up against Mitchell, but he is going to have to deal with Mike Conley. The Jazz veteran point guard is averaging almost 14 points per game this season. Maxey doesn’t figure to be an obstacle in Conley’s path to scoring 13 or more tonight.

Andre Drummond Under 13.5 Rebounds (-115, DraftKings Sportsbook)

DraftKings Sportsbook

We will shed our tendency to overthink this one by saying that a. Rudy Gobert is not going to let Drummond do a lot of the things he has done from a rebounding standpoint in recent games and b. the Sixers may be playing a lot of garbage time in the fourth quarter (or before), which will necessitate getting Drummond out of this game to save his legs for the remainder of this road trip.

As the line kept rising during the writing of this piece, the question became: How many points would the Sixers need to be getting here to make you comfortable that they could cover? After a few minutes of contemplation, the answer came: Quite a few more than 10.
