On Monday night, the Philadelphia Flyers (8-10-4) will play their first game after firing coach Alain Vigneault. The coach lost his gig because of the Flyers recent eight-game losing streak (0-6-2) in which they’ve been outscored 37-13. They will host the Colorado Avalanche (12-7-2) at Wells Fargo Center. It is the first meeting of the season between the two teams.

Let’s get into our Flyers vs. Avalanche betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this December 6, 2021 matchup.

Flyers-Avalanche Preview

The Flyers have turned the page. General Manager Chuck Fletcher fired Vigneault Monday morning. It was more of a mercy firing at this point. Vigneault pushed every button possible and came up empty.

Assistant coach Mike Yeo takes over on an interim basis, and has his hands full of trying to fix a broken team.

The Flyers have been unable to score goals for more than a month with just 28 goals in their last 17 games. The power play has clicked on just 6 of their last 60 opportunities.

Making matters worse, aside from an absolutely brutal schedule, the Flyers are still missing four starters due to injury: Ryan Ellis (lower body), Derick Brassard (hip), Nate Thompson (shoulder) and Joel Farabee (shoulder).

The Avalanche are in the middle of a five-game road trip. They are 1-1-1 thus far, having lost their last game, a 6-5 overtime defeat in Ottawa.

The big guns in Colorado have been producing. In the last five games, Mikko Rantanen has three goals, Nathan MacKinnon has six assists and Gabriel Landeskog has seven points.

Colorado also has a slew of injuries, but none are really long-term. Most notable are Cale Makar (upper body) and Nazem Kadri (lower body).

The Flyers are a mess and after firing two coaches have had no time to practice. Oh, and they’re starting their backup goalie, which doesn’t really matter as the backup and the starter both have pedestrian numbers, which happen to be about the same. So, Colorado should win this game. However, we do expect the Flyers to show some fight. It was their lack of fight that got two coaches canned. So, we expect a little bit out of them tonight. And with Colorado without Makar and Darcy Kuemper not exactly setting the world on fire in net, this one has the makings of a bit of a high-scoring affair.

The Flyers struggle to score. We know this. They know this. Which is why they have to keep firing pucks on net. They’ve surpassed this total in the last two games as they showed a desperation to score. We expect they will again. If not, they’re likely not going to win. Heck, they’re likely not going to win regardless.

MacKinnon collects points in volume. Tonight should be no different against a depleted and suspect Flyers defense and a backup goalie. Look for MacKinnon to score a goal and pick up at least one assist in this high-scoring affair.

Flyers vs. Avalanche Prediction

You can’t pick the Flyers right now. You just can’t. But we do think you can expect them to start trying to play a better version of the game as a wake up call. Still, it won’t be enough to stop Colorado.

Prediction: Avalanche 5, Flyers 3
