On Tuesday night, the Philadelphia Flyers (13-18-7) will look to prevent their losing streak from reaching nine games when they take on the New York Islanders (12-13-6) for the second consecutive night. The Islanders won in New York 4-1 on Monday. The two teams will meet again next Tuesday back in New York and finally on March 20, back in Philadelphia.

Let’s get into our Flyers vs. Islanders betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this January 18, 2022 matchup.

Flyers-Islanders Preview

We thought the Flyers might steal one last night, and for the better part of the first two periods, that really seemed likely and/or possible. They threw everything including the kitchen sink at Ilya Sorokin, and he stopped everything but the kitchen sink, which was a crazy pass from Travis Konecny that wasn’t intended to go on net, but caromed off a couple Islanders and changed direction, beelining past a surprised Sorokin.

But, once the Islanders scored in the third period, with the Flyers both turning the puck over in their zone and then running around their own zone like blindfolded kindergarteners during a fire drill, the deal was sealed. They weren’t coming back, and they were going to lose their eighth straight game.

The Flyers will have to play like they did last night but about 25 percent better, and Carter Hart will have to stone the Islanders in net for the streak to come to an end.

Meanwhile, the Islanders, albeit a long shot, have their eyes set on getting back into the playoffs.  They’re actually further back than the Flyers (16 points out) but they have a lot of games to make up, having only played 31 to this point, and feel like they can get on a run against some weaker opposition the rest of this month.

Sorokin was great against the Flyers, but the Islanders got goals from unexpected sources. Casey Cizikas and Matt Martin each broke goalless droughts of over 40 games, and Anthony Beauvillier, who was a playoff darling for the Islanders the last two seasons and who always seems to score against the Flyers, has been in coach Barry Trotz’s doghouse of late. Brock Nelson also scored for New York.

We already mentioned Hart will start for the Flyers, while New York will lean on Semyon Varlamov, who although he doesn’t have a winning record, has been solid when he’s played for the Islanders.

Yesterday we suggested Zach Parise for this player prop as the goal scorer and told you it was because the Islanders’ third line (and other teams third lines for that matter) always seem to have offensive success against the Flyers.

Well, they didn’t score a goal last night, but man they did everything but score one.

Wahlstrom led the Islanders in shots on goal with five. Parise was next with four. Add in J.G. Pageau’s two and they had 11 of the Islanders’ 31 shots. They were the best line in the game last night, and we don’t think tonight will be any different.

Wahlstrom has the best expected odds, but if you want to try one of the others, Pageau is +290 and Parise is +400. One of them is going to get it into the net tonight.

Yes, another long shot prop bet, but the reality is, the Flyers can’t win unless they get scoring from elsewhere in the lineup other than their top line or a fluke goal like they got yesterday from Konecny.

So, why did we pick Lindblom? He’s been playing better hockey lately, is more of a scoring threat playing on a scoring line, and because he’s scored a goal in five of the last six Flyers home games.

For +540, that’s a good enough rationale to give it a whirl.

The one thing that we haven’t discussed is how bad the ice was in New York yesterday, and yet the teams were able to trade chances for much of the first two periods. Better ice would have led to more scores, no doubt, and yet there were still five scored.

Wells Fargo Center always has decent ice. As such, since we are expecting a similar game, tonight, we’ll tell you there’ll be at least one more goal, and probably two, to get you over the total and win your bet.

Flyers vs. Islanders Prediction

We can’t pick the Flyers. Even though the odds are screaming at us to do so. We thought about it. A long time. But in the end, it’s going to be the Islanders in a shootout, because they have more talented breakaway scorers than the Flyers.

Prediction: Islanders 4, Flyers 3 (SO)
