On Saturday night, the Philadelphia Flyers (13-12-6) will try to tie an NHL record and become just the second team to have an eight-game point streak immediately following a winless streak of at least 10 games as they continue a four-game Western Conference road trip by visiting the Los Angeles Kings (15-12-5) at Crypto.com Arena. It is the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The Kings will visit the Flyers on January 29.

Let’s get into our Flyers vs. Kings betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this January 1, 2022 matchup.

Flyers-Kings Preview

Tthe Flyers extended their point streak to seven games (5-0-2) with an ugly overtime loss Thursday in San Jose. They did it behind a franchise record 43 saves by a goalie making his NHL debut, in this instance Felix Sandstrom, an early goal by Morgan Frost and a late goal by Joel Farabee to force the extra session. It was the fourth consecutive game for the Flyers to go past regulation (2-0-2).

Despite the current point streak, the Flyers have not looked great, although, to their credit they are doing this without their top goalie (Carter Hart), top center (Sean Couturier), top pair defenseman (Ryan Ellis), as well as jack-of-all-trades forwards Scott Laughton and Derick Brassard, all of whom are in the COVID-19 protocol. While in the protocol, both Ellis and Couturier remain on injured reserve with other maladies as well.

As for the Kings, they are 5-2-1 in their last eight games, despite a tough schedule. In that stretch they have wins over Minnesota, Florida, and Washington and earned a point in an overtime loss to Tampa Bay.

The Kings are in the midst of a seven-game homestand (1-1-0 so far) and are coming off a 2-1 win over Vancouver on Thursday.

The Kings have been an excellent defensive team this season and are allowing just 2.66 goals per game, which ranks ninth in the NHL. Their style could create problems for the shorthanded Flyers, whose 2.64 goals per game output ranks 26th in the league, and that’s not taking into consideration all the players out of the lineup.

Once again, Anze Kopitar leads the Kings in scoring with 28 points, but it’s Adrian Kempe who has tallied the most goals this season for Los Angeles with 13.

Another interesting thing about the Kings is they are the least-penalized team in the Western Conference, so if the Flyers are going to score on them, they’re likely going to have to do so at 5-on-5, something they have really struggled with in the last couple games.

There’s no doubt that the Flyers struggle to score goals. They come into this game averaging just 2.64 goals per game, which is better than only six other NHL teams. It’s also right around the same number of goals the Kings allow. In these kinds of matchups, where its struggling offense vs. solid defense, it’s always a good bet to take the under, especially if you believe the defensive team is going to win.

And how about this stat? The Kings haven’t allowed more than two goals in any game they’ve won this season and have outscored their opponents 54-21 in those 15 games.

As for total goals? In those 15 wins, 10 times has the total been under 5.5 goals. It just seems too easy to let this one slide even though the odds are about even.

Giroux has been the Flyers’ most consistent offensive player this season. He leads the team in scoring with 27 points and is second on the team in goals with 11 behind only Cam Atkinson (13). Giroux also has had some games where he’s been the best player on the ice, and with the Flyers so shorthanded up front against a defensively-minded squad like the Kings, it will likely take a player of Giroux’s skillset to topple L.A.

He’s already had seven multi-point games this season, so it’s not a stretch to think he can do it again. If you think the Flyers can win this one, you might want to parlay the captain and get a nice value on your side bet.

In six of the last seven games the Kings have been favorites, the score at the end of the first period has been 0-0.

The Flyers have had their share of 0-0 first periods, but it’s only happened once in the past 19 games. Still, with the Flyers struggling so mightily on offense and the Kings playing a defense-first game, especially in those they win –which we think they will in this one– this seems like a time for the Flyers to get back to having a 0-0 first period. They had five 0-0 first periods in their first 12 games of the season.

Meanwhile, the Kings have had 14 first periods that ended 0-0 in their 32 games thus far. The odds are too good to pass this up.

Flyers vs. Kings Prediction

It’s a third game in four nights for the Flyers and they’ve looked road weary in the last two. The Kings had a stout defensive win in the second game back after a long layoff Thursday and will look to do it again.

Mike Yeo may have tipped his hand by starting Felix Sandstrom in San Jose and saving Martin Jones for the Kings, in the sense that he believes it’ll be tough sledding for his team to score and he’d rather have the veteran goalie giving it a go in  L.A. given the fact that the Flyers will have to keep the score low to win this one.

Doubt that happens though.

Prediction: Kings 3, Flyers 1
