Flyers-Sabres Preview

The Flyers have never been this bad before. Sure, their record, while not good, is better than a few others in the franchise’s past, however having two 10-game winless streaks in the same season is so rare that this is just the third time it’s happened since the NHL eliminated ties.

Last season, Buffalo posted the longest winless streak in the NHL since the elimination of ties (18 games), but had it come to an end on a road game in Philadelphia. The Flyers will look to put an end to their own anguish by returning the favor to the Sabres.

Carter Hart is expected to get the start in net for the Flyers, who had another key player lost to injury last game as Joel Farabee (shoulder) will miss a month. He joins Sean Couturier, Ryan Ellis, Derick Brassard, Patrick Brown and Nate Thompson on injured reserve.

As for the Sabres, they too are struggling, having lost 9-of-11, but for the most part have been a decent hockey team this month. They blew three leads against Dallas Tuesday in a come-from-ahead, 5-4 loss. But they’re starting to get some offensive production and their 5-on-5 defense has been more stout. Their special teams are still a mess – they allowed four power play goals to the Stars on Tuesday, but as long as they can stay disciplined, they could maintain an advantage against the Flyers.

Top prospect Jack Quinn scored his first NHL goal in just his second NHL game against Dallas. Quinn has two points in two games thus far. Rasmus Dahlin, Dylan Cozens and Alex Tuch also scored for Buffalo.

Michael Houser is expected to make his second start of the season in goal for the Sabres. He backstopped Buffalo to a 3-1 win in Ottawa on Tuesday.

Flyers coach said his team gets “nervous” and “loses its structure” after allowing the first goal of a game. Cam Atkinson said the bench gets deflated.

This is where Flyers games are won or lost. The Flyers are just 2-17-3 when allowing the first goal and they’ve only won once when trailing after the first period (1-11-2). So, the formula to beating the Flyers centers around that first period.

Win the period, win a hockey game, Sabres. You can bet on it.

Simply put, we believe in Carter Hart.

If there’s been one shining spot for the Flyers in both of their losing streaks is that goaltending has done a masterful job of keeping them in games.

Hart’s numbers won’t wow you (7-13-5, 2.90 GAA, .912 save percentage), but considering how bad the team in front of him is, he’s been keeping them alive longer than they probably deserve to be.

Meanwhile, Houser is still in prove it mode and trying to show he belongs in the NHL. He played an excellent game against Ottawa Tuesday and wants to keep the momentum going against another low-scoring team in Philadelphia.

How many other guys in their first NHL game of the season have odds this good? Yeah, they are long still, but almost anyone else coming up from the NHL would be +550 or better.

It shows you the kind of goal-scoring skill Allison has.

He’ll see a lot of ice time today too, and likely even some on the power play. Allison will gat a chance to play against a woeful Buffalo defense, while Houser is the Sabres’ sixth goalie to be used in a game. This all adds up for the Flyers and Allison in a very positive manner.

Flyers vs. Sabres Prediction

Look, it’s quite simple. We know the Flyers will end this losing skid at some point, but until they do, we can’t, in good conscience, predict a win.

Prediction: Sabres 3, Flyers 2
