On Friday night, the Sixers will host the Los Angeles Clippers at the Wells Fargo Center. The Sixers are coming off a professional beating of the Orlando Magic, highlighted by Joel Embiid’s 50-point performance. The Sixers continue to hover precariously above the playoff play-in spots in the Eastern Conference. The Clippers are 22-24 and firmly in the play-in group, ninth in the Western Conference one spot below…the Los Angeles Lakers. Not a banner year for hoops in L.A. this season. You hate to see it.

Let’s get into our Sixers vs. Clippers betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this January 21, 2022 matchup.

Sixers vs. Clippers Betting Pick (January 21, 2022)

It’s not always so great being a Philadelphia sports fan. The teams are, by and large, not prolific winners and sometimes, as with this Flyers season, they’re outright deplorable. Living in the shadow of cities like New York, Boston and even Washington D.C. on occasion isn’t so hot, either. But it could be worse. You could be stuck being a fan of a team like the Los Angeles Clippers, a team that isn’t even most fans’ favorite in its own city. It’s pretty tough to compete with the Lakers.

Obviously, there are many examples of this. New York has, if we’re being honest, too many professional sports teams, and in practical terms what that means is that there are Alpha teams and there are Beta teams in that city. Giants fans look down on Jets fans. Rangers fans think Islanders fans are clowns. Knicks fans consider the Nets a neighbor, not a league power and not a threat to the Knicks’ hold on the city. And, well, pour one out for Mets fans. Sharing a city with the Yankees is about as tough as it gets.

Then you have White Sox and Cubs fans in Chicago, Dodgers and Angels fans in the greater metro Los Angeles area, Chargers and Rams fans in the same general geographic region. In each case, there’s a lead dog and a dog whose view is generally the lead dog’s butt.

In the prior decade, the Clippers tried to shed themselves of the stink of being the Lakers’ lesser co-tenant at the Staples Center. They made eight playoff appearances and pushed their way into the Western Conference semifinals four times. Three of those playoff runs came under current Sixers coach Doc Rivers. And last season, the Clips got all the way to the Western Conference finals. Unfortunately for the Clippers, Kawhi Leonard is probably out for the season, and Paul George is also missing tonight’s game. What’s left of the Clippers without those two players is exactly what you might think: Not really a playoff team.

You can only stop being who you are and shake your past for so long. The Clippers are always going to be also-rans in Los Angeles, no matter what they do.

Holy mackerel are the Clippers running and gunning these days. The scores of the last two Clippers games: 130-128 (loss to the Nuggets in overtime), 139-133 (win over the Pacers). The Sixers have gone over 100 points in three of their last four games. This should be an entertaining game as long as you don’t care too much about defense.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Joel Embiid Over 30.5 Points (-115, Caesars Sportsbook)

Unless you’ve been trapped under something heavy for a while, you know that Embiid is on a scoring run the likes of which this city hasn’t seen since the best days of Allen Iverson. Embiid’s 50 points on Wednesday night were amazing, but it’s not like that performance came out of nowhere. Over Embiid’s last 15 games, he has scored at least 30 points an astounding 13 times. This is for the time being a “we’re betting this prop” situation until something changes.

Tyrese Maxey Over 15.5 Points (-115, DraftKings Sportsbook)

Get well soon, Seth Curry. While Curry is out, though, Maxey projects to have more of the ball and to take on some of the scoring onus in Curry’s absence. Against a Clippers team that doesn’t seem particularly motivated on the defensive end lately, Maxey should be able to get to 16 or more points on floaters alone.

Clippers Over 20.5 Points in Every Quarter (-125, FOX Bet)

The Clippers are only scoring 105.4 points per game for the season, 25th out of 30 in the NBA. But they’re scoring in bunches recently, and 21 points in 12 minutes four times isn’t really asking much of the Clippers, even in a game they figure to lose.

Sixers vs. Clippers Prediction

Barstool Sportsbook

Tonight is the first game of a seven-game eastern swing for the Clippers that will present them with a few juicier opportunities for wins than this game tonight (Knicks, Pacers, Magic). It’s not so much that the Clippers will be looking past the Sixers, it’s that the Clippers will probably realize relatively early in this one that the Sixers are the second-best team they’ll face on this road trip, and that there will be other chances to pick up ground in the standings. Just not tonight.

Pick: Sixers -8.5  (-110, Barstool Sportsbook)
