On Saturday night, the Sixers welcome the Sacramento Kings to the Wells Fargo Center. The Sixers are coming off a relatively easy win over the Los Angeles Lakers on Thursday night. Other than the Lakers, the losers at the Center on Thursday were the ticket buyers, who found out hours before tip that LeBron James was not going to play. At 29-19, the Sixers remained moored to sixth place in the Eastern Conference. The Kings are 18-32 and in 13th place in the Western Conference.

Let’s get into our Sixers vs. Kings betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this January 29, 2022 matchup.

Sixers vs. Kings Betting Pick (January 29, 2022)

The timing of this matchup is interesting, as the Kings put word out yesterday that they were no longer interested in trading for Ben Simmons. At some level, the Kings took the high road by saying that the Sixers’ asking price is too steep and that they have other deals with other teams in the works that they need to focus their attention on.

Unspoken, of course, is the question that no one can answer right now: What, exactly, is Ben Simmons’ trade value? If you take the player at his word, that he needed to step away from the Sixers for mental health reasons, on a human level you sympathize but on a basketball business level you have to say, “why would we trade real assets for a mentally unstable player?” If you’re a cynic who thinks the mental health justification for Simmons’ absence was manufactured, at some level that’s much worse — this is a player who flat out cannot be trusted.

The adage “things in motion tend to stay in motion, and things at rest tend to stay at rest” has ominous overtones for Ben Simmons. The Sixers have played 48 games this season, and Simmons has played zero games this season. Is playing All-Star level basketball something Simmons can turn on and off like a light switch? Or could Simmons end up going the route of so many great athletes who, upon losing their confidence or their desire or their purpose, just fade away?

Fortunately, or unfortunately, Sixers fans are going to learn the answer to this question only after Simmons is gone.

We picked this same prop on Thursday afternoon. By Thursday night, it was too late to pull it back, but quite clearly the absence of James had a huge impact on the game total. Tonight, the Kings are mostly healthy (De’Aaron Fox is questionable), and the Kings were scoring points in bunches before a 75-point aberration in Boston on Tuesday night.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Joel Embiid Over 32.5 Points (-120, Caesars Sportsbook)

All good things must come to an end, and Embiid’s streak of beating his over prop ended Thursday night when he “only” had 26. Some of that was Anthony Davis, and some of that was the fact that the Sixers were never really in trouble against a Lakers team that, without James, is a bottom feeder. It’s Saturday night in Philadelphia, the Sixers are rolling, and the Kings don’t have anyone capable of slowing Embiid down.

You may not be satisfied by what Thybulle has become, which is a pure defensive specialist who offers very little on the offensive end. But Thybulle seems pretty comfortable with it. Thybulle jumps passing lanes and tries to block any shot he can reach with the same zeal that great scorers attack the rim and find open corner threes.

Harrison Barnes Over 14.5 Points (-118, FOX Bet)

It must seem like another lifetime for Barnes when he thinks about winning a championship with the Golden State Warriors. Playing out another low-stakes season with the Kings is his fate right now. Barnes seems to be OK with that, especially lately. Barnes is averaging over 18 points a game in his last seven outings.

There aren’t any trope-type angles hanging over this game. The Kings haven’t played since Wednesday night. It’s not a letdown game for the Sixers because beating the Lakers without James was a routine thing. It’s not a trap game for the Sixers because their next game is against the Memphis Grizzlies. In short, this is a game where you can simply look at the two teams and be comfortable that it’s a face-value situation. On its face, this game should not be close. We are betting that it won’t be.
