On Wednesday night, the Sixers will be in Florida to take on the woeful Orlando Magic. The Sixers have won four in a row since that unsightly loss to the depleted Atlanta Hawks at home on December 23, which is exactly the sort of response that that game called for. The Sixers are 20-16. As for the Magic, it’s a long slow boat ride to nowhere. They’ve lost six games in a row and haven’t won since December 22.

Let’s get into our Sixers vs. Magic betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this January 5, 2022 matchup.

Sixers vs. Magic Betting Pick (January 5, 2022)

Fans do dumb things. Fans in Philadelphia, on occasion, do exceptionally dumb things. They’re doing one of those things now — they’re booing Tobias Harris.

As often happens with these things, money factors prominently. Harris is making just a tick less than $36 million this season, and he will be paid almost $77 million over the next two seasons. For that money, fans want the sort of production you get from Bradley Beal or Damian Lillard. Harris has never really been capable of that, and he’s not doing it this season.

But Harris is doing what his historical data tells you he will. Actually, he’s doing a little better than that. Harris has averaged 16.3 points per game in his career. This season, he’s averaging 18.3 points. He has averaged 6.2 rebounds per game for his career and so far this season he’s pulling down 7.6 boards per game. He has almost doubled his assist average this season as against his career number (3.9 compared to 2.2). Harris is playing better than his career averages, and at least recently, it’s not enough.

Harris was booed over some missed shots in the Sixers’ drubbing of the Houston Rockets on Monday night and reacted about how you probably would if you got booed for poor performance at your job. He waved off cheers later in the game for a made shot and seemed to mouth something along the lines of “nah, don’t clap.” Harris’ closest friends might have advised him not to go there, but he did.

The fans’ frustration with Harris, aside from the money, is the perception that he is capable of more than he is doing. Fans see a 6’8″ player who can handle it a little, shoot it a little, who has a size mismatch a lot of the time, and want him to average 24 and 10. This is wasted energy. Harris isn’t going to do that. If he could, he would have by now. Any negative energy being directed at Harris should be channeled instead toward the Sixers’ front office, which continues to dither about not trading Ben Simmons away. Booing Tobias Harris for not being worth $36 million per season is wasted breath, because he’s getting the money whether you think he’s worth it or not.

During this four-game win streak, the Sixers have shown a new affinity for running and trading baskets. Totals in the Sixers’ past four games: 213, 223, 212, 246. That last one is obviously an outlier, but the trend should hold.

Sixers -2.5 Points in First Quarter (-120, Caesars Sportsbook)

The Sixers have been getting out of the blocks fast during this recent win streak. They have won each of the last three first quarters by at least three points. There is no reason to let an undermanned, not particularly talented in the first place team like the Magic hang around long in this game. The Sixers should be motivated to get out front fast and stay there.

It’s not the greatest look for Doc Rivers, but the Sixers have found something on the offensive end under interim coach Dan Burke. Specifically, Burke has made a concerted effort to protect his bench players by keeping a starter or two on the floor as much as he possibly can. Too often under Rivers, the Sixers feel like the Flyers, i.e., making line changes rather than individual substitutions. This has led to some ugly passages for the Sixers’ second unit. Teams will adjust to what Burke is doing, and of course Rivers is going to return to the sideline soon. Until then, though, look for the Sixers to keep racking up healthy point totals.

Tobias Harris Under 19.5 Points (-118, FOX Bet)

Harris has scored 19 points or fewer in four of his last five outings, including a fairly hideous nine-point effort at Brooklyn on December 30. In his last outing against Orlando on November 29, he had 17. Let’s not overthink this.

The Sixers covered 13 the other night against the Rockets despite somehow conspiring to trail at halftime. The Magic have very little going for them right now and do not project to offer much resistance in this game. This season has been marked with COVID-19 absences; remarkably, the Magic don’t really have that as an excuse as only Robin Lopez is currently in the health and safety protocol. Instead, it’s a slew of injured players that leaves the Magic fairly helpless in this game. Here’s the injury report outside of Lopez: Cole Anthony, Michael Carter-Williams, Markelle Fultz, Jonathan Isaac, E’Twaun Moore, Jalen Suggs. That’s too many missing bodies.
