On Wednesday night, the Sixers are back home to host the truly terrible Orlando Magic. The Sixers played an uncharacteristically sloppy and low energy game on Monday afternoon, losing to the Washington Wizards by 19 points. The loss dropped the Sixers back into sixth place in the Eastern Conference, the last spot that keeps them out of the playoff play-in. There is not a path the playoffs for the Magic, who are 8-37.

Let’s get into our Sixers vs. Magic betting pick with player prop predictions, odds, and analysis for this January 19, 2022 matchup.

Sixers vs. Magic Betting Pick (January 19, 2022)

The Sixers are just good enough to be a probable playoff team but they can’t be trusted to beat the worst team in the league unless they try their absolute hardest, and that’s ridiculous. Allow me to explain.

The Magic are the worst team in the league, trailing the Detroit Pistons by a couple of games and the Houston Rockets by a few more. The Sixers are favored by double digits in this game, and that makes sense. The Magic broke a ten-game losing streak by beating the Charlotte Hornets five days ago, and then promptly went back to losing two in a row. They’re just bad.

This is a game that a good, deep team should be using to rest players. Except, though the Sixers are good, they’re not particularly deep. The Sixers are basically Joel Embiid and a lot of guys nobody really trusts. Putting it more specifically, the Sixers are favored by 12 points tonight, but if they sat Embiid or if Embiid wasn’t available, that line would suddenly drop to six or seven and you’d also have to seriously consider a small play on the Magic’s moneyline.

That being said, Embiid misses enough games every season to make playing him whenever he is available absolutely necessary. It would just be nice if they had the luxury to occasionally give him a break when he is healthy. But they don’t.

The heavy weight placed on the Sixers on the moneyline brings the value of this parlay way down, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t some value here. The Magic are the third-worst offensive team in the NBA, and the Sixers don’t exactly fill it up, either (21st in the league). This projects to be a non-classic, which usually means a lot of missed shots.

Bets We Like Independent of Outcome

Cole Anthony Over 16.5 Points (-115, Caesars Sportsbook)

The Sixers know about the fragility of first round draft picks, which the Magic are living with as they try to rebuild their team through the draft. The Magic have had some thuds come out of the first round, and they didn’t exactly get lucky with Markelle Fultz’s knee injury, either. But Cole Anthony, taken 15th in the 2020 NBA Draft, might be a piece the Magic can build around. He’s averaging almost 19 points a game and he’s hitting 85% of his free throws. If he can just drag his shooting percentage above 40%…anyway, he shouldn’t have too much trouble getting his season average tonight, which is two points past this prop.

Harris played like a bucket of (fill in the blank) on Monday. Seven points, six fouls, one rebound, and a -12 on the night. We should all feel fortunate that Harris did that in the relative safety of Washington, D.C., and not at the Wells Fargo Center where he already has a bit of a target on his back. Anyway, the Magic are a fantastic slump-buster. If Harris can’t get on track tonight, there may be more reason for concern than there already is about him.

Sixers to Win Both First and Second Quarters (+110, boosted from -105, FOX Bet)

We love bet boosts. When they pay off, it doesn’t just feel like free money, it feels like free money plus a gratuity on top. Anyway, the Magic are exactly the sort of team that the Sixers should be able to jump out on quickly and keep down. After the Sixers’ fairly putrid effort on Monday, it stands to reason that they will try to come out of the blocks fast in this game.

Twelve points is a lot of points, and the back door cover is going to be a significant threat well into the fourth quarter because even if the Sixers get a huge lead, the second unit and the end-of-the-bench guys are capable of giving up points in bunches. Still, there isn’t a case to be made for the Magic. Maybe just a lighter unit on this one, accounting for the possibility that the Sixers don’t try to blow the Magic out.
