Let’s get it back to the Eagles. There is rumor mongering about. Monger is a great word, isn’t it? You can “monger” many things, like war, cheese, or fish.

There was some DK Metcalf chatter on social media and I had no idea where it was coming from. Philadelphia Eagles trading for Metcalf? Metcalf being available? What the hell is going on here?

Turns out it’s sourced to an article in The Athletic from Michael-Shawn Dugar, titled The Seahawks’ path to more cap space: Potential cuts, contract restructures and trade candidates. In the story, he talks about how Seattle can reclaim some needed assets:

Because Seattle doesn’t have a first-round pick in 2022, (GM John) Schneider figures to at least explore the possibility of trying to acquire one. But outside of (Russell) Wilson there aren’t many ways to do that, either. The only realistic option is receiver DK Metcalf, whose contract expires after the 2022 season. Since entering the league as a second-round pick in 2019, Metcalf among receivers ranks fifth in receiving touchdowns (29), 10th in receiving yards (3,170) and 17th in receptions (216). He doesn’t turn 25 until December.

Seattle would have no problem finding someone willing to give up a first-round pick — perhaps an early one — for the right to acquire Metcalf and sign him to an extension that pays him like one of the best players at his position (about $22 million per year). Such a move would be reminiscent of Seattle’s decision to trade defensive end Frank Clark to the Chiefs ahead of the 2019 draft in exchange for a 2019 first-round pick and a 2020 second-round pick. The Chiefs then signed Clark to a five-year, $104 million contract. Seattle used the 2019 pick it got from Kansas City on defensive end L.J. Collier.

Hmm… Well I’m intrigued. Metcalf is only 24 years old and hasn’t caught fewer than 900 yards worth of passes in any single season so far. Eagles fans were always annoyed that he went seven picks after JJAW in the 2019 draft, and this could be an opportunity for REDEMPTION.

We all know that the Eagles need a bigger bodied possession receiver. There are some mocks linking them to Drake London (USC) and Treylon Burks (Arkansas) in April. There’s also a portion of Eagles fans who think there’s no way Howie Roseman uses all three first round draft picks, and either packages one or more into a QB trade, or swaps a pick for more assets down the road. But hypothetically, if Metcalf was available, and you gave up 15 or 16 in order to get him, then paid him a big-money deal, would that make sense? Would you #DoTheDeal?

I put together a 10-step offseason outline last week, and my preference is to use all three picks on defensive players, then go into free agency for the receiver that complements DeVonta Smith. D.J. Chark on a prove-it deal, Allen Robinson, throw the money at Mike Williams, etc. Something like that. Metcalf is intriguing, though. I cannot lie. Metcalf on one side and Smith on the other would be nasty, we would just need Jalen Hurts to get them the ball consistently.
