Flyers-Penguins Preview

This is looking like the last cross-state rivalry game between the Flyers and Penguins for Claude Giroux.

Giroux is expected to be traded before the March 21 trade deadline. He has played in 60 career games vs. the Penguins and has scored 20 goals and 43 assists for 63 points.

And although the Flyers are among the worst teams in the NHL, there is going to be a goodbye tour of sorts for their captain, and one can be certain that this game against the Penguins will have a little more meaning.

That’s because every game between the teams for more than a decade has always had a Giroux vs. Sidney Crosby storyline. Crosby has certainly had more success, both individually and team-wise, but as you can tell from Giroux’s numbers, he has never backed down. He has averaged more than a point per game against the Penguins.

Yet, as good as that is, Crosby is otherworldly against the Flyers. In 78 games against Philadelphia he has 49 goals and 68 assists for 117 points. His 49 goals are the most against any opponent.

Pittsburgh is also playing great hockey. The team is 9-1-3 in its last 13 games and has vaulted itself to the top of the Metropolitan Division standings.

This might seem like a sentimental pick, but if the Flyers are going to pull off the upset –and do so with 11 players missing from their lineup as is the case again tonight– it’s going to be on the shoulders of Giroux, who might just have one more special performance against Pittsburgh in his bag of tricks.

Giroux is also +1600 to score the first goal of the game. This might seem like an outrageous bet, but it’s not. If the Flyers are going to win, they’re going to have to get out in front of the Penguins early. There’s not a lot of comeback in Philadelphia.

Here’s one for you: Crosby needs one more goal to reach 500 in his career. It would also be his 50th vs. the Flyers if it happens tonight.

In what is sure to be an emotional game in the last captain vs. captain clash between two surefire Hall of Famers in their last game as rivals in this series, they’re going to try to one-up each other, and we expect both of them to score in a memorable game.

Another thing about the Flyers is they give up a lot of shots. Hart has made at least 30 saves in more than half of his starts this season (15-of-29) and the Penguins are a top-10 team in getting shots on goal, averaging 34.6 per game. This is one of those games where we expect a high volume coming Hart’s way, meaning this bet is a good one regardless of who you think might win.

Flyers vs. Penguins Prediction

The Flyers are going to give their best possible effort against the Penguins, playing for their captain in this one. It matters to him. Couple that with the fact that they get to face Penguins backup goalie Casey DeSmith and not starter Tristan Jarry, and the Flyers actually have a shot, which is amazing considering the long odds.

Still, the Penguins are a much deeper, much more talented team. The Flyers will give them a game. And it might be worth betting the Flyers with the puck line, but the Penguins will pull this one out on talent alone, a fitting ending to the Giroux vs. Crosby rivalry.

Prediction: Penguins 4, Flyers 3
