Howie Roseman Has to Draft this Guy

Just sat down to work, opened up the laptop, and saw this on the Twitter feed:

Well shit. I’ve got a place for you, Mr. Winfrey. Philadelphia. We love the dog mentality. No mediocrity will be accepted here.

I love this attitude. I would draft Winfrey for this comment alone, without even looking at his tape, but luckily I did get to see him play because I’m probably the only Philadelphia sports writer who watches Big 12 football willingly. Normally, I wouldn’t recommend drafting any defensive player from the Big 12, EVER, but he’s pretty good as a DT who lines up in different spots. He’s kind of a mid-draft prospect, like a solid backup who has the potential to become a future starter. God knows Fletcher Cox isn’t getting any younger, and behind him and Javon Hargrave (on his final contract year) you’ve got Milton Williams and Hassan Ridgeway and maybe Marlon Tuipulotu, if he figures it out.

Winfrey was the 2022 Senior Bowl MVP. He had 23 tackles, 5.5 sacks, and a forced fumble in the pass-heavy Big 12. He’s and up-and-down player who shows these nasty highlight reel type of flashes, like this:

He’s 6’4″, 297, and a JUCO transfer from Iowa Western Community College, which means he’s a “chip on the shoulder” type of guy. He obviously had to work his way up from a lower level to make it to Norman, and he also had transfer offers from LSU and Texas and Baylor, so he improved drastically in a short amount of time. These types of guys typically are late bloomers, but they have a ton of heart and confidence and drive.

Looking over projections now, it seems like most most scouts have him going in the 3rd or 4th round. The Eagles need an EDGE more than an interior lineman right now, but I think we all know they could use as much help as possible on defensive side of the ball. This dude hits like a truck and is a dog who doesn’t want to accept mediocrity. This is a slam dunk perfect fit for Philly. Howie Roseman should #DoTheDeal if Winfrey is sitting there in the middle of the draft.
