Interesting nugget from Peter King in his Football Morning in America column.

He wrote this about the Eagles/Dolphins trade that ultimately resulted in the Birds dropping down to #12 and picking up an extra first round draft pick in the process:

“Before the draft last year, Miami traded up from 12th overall to get the sixth pick—to take receiver Jaylen Waddle, as it turned out—and Philadelphia acquired a first-round pick in 2022 in return. But Miami had two first-round picks in ’22. Which one would be sent?

Miami had its 2022 first-rounder, and one from San Francisco in the trade the Niners made to draft Trey Lance third overall. Last spring, I talked to both GM Chris Grier and then-coach Brian Flores, and I was left with the distinct impression that Eagles GM Howie Roseman was insistent that the Eagles have their choice of the two Miami 2022 first-rounders. Miami was coming off a 10-6 season in 2020; injury-riddled San Francisco went 6-10. Roseman obviously had to decide which team would be picking higher in the ’22 draft. It was a guess, but he wanted the Dolphins pick. He figured San Francisco would have a better season in 2021 and thus pick lower.

Intriguing.

Miami started off poorly but rallied to go 9-8. San Francisco was 10-7, but made that playoff run, and so they ended up with the 29th overall pick. The Dolphins ended up picking 15th.

So Roseman reportedly deciding between the two resulted in him making the right call, and that first rounder was 14 spots higher than what it would have been had he decided to go the other route. The Eagles would have had 16, 19, and 29, instead of 15, 16, and 19.

That’s a nice bit of business by Howie, who tends to find value in the margins. He’s always been savvy when it comes to accruing assets and trying to maximize potential deals to favor the Eagles. Now he just has to make sure he gets the selections right. Pick the right guys, or trade one of those picks and get more back in the process. No more Jalen Reagors or JJAWs. Please and thank you.
