The City of Philadelphia and the Wells Fargo Center are no longer requiring masks at Sixers games, which means tonight’s home debut for James Harden as a Sixer is going to be even louder than it might have been a week ago. The Sixers lead the Bucks by a full game (two in the loss column) to maintain third place in the Eastern Conference. The Knicks are still drifting aimlessly toward another lottery appearance.

It’s beyond tiring seeing how stupid the national media thinks Philadelphia sports fans are.

The latest evidence of this has come with the arrival of James Harden in Philadelphia. Harden has played two games as a Sixer, he has played exceptionally well in both of those games, and the Sixers won both of those games handily. Naturally, there is a lot of excitement among Sixers fans now. That’s a reasonable response to ridding oneself of a player who refused to play for your favorite team and seeing him replaced by a player who, on current evidence, is still elite.

The national media is already on its bullshit, though. This site has chronicled the numerous commentators who are clucking their tongues at Sixers fans, warning us not to overreact to a couple of games and cautioning us to remember that Harden left two teams in 15 months and, as soon as it goes sour here, he’ll leave us too. Hey, thanks for that, you jagoffs. Because the commentary generally only goes one way, though (especially with some of the softer minded types who either don’t have social media or restrict replies), we’ll take this chance to respond: We already know everything you are saying, we understand it completely, and we do not care.

We don’t care because teams win championships in all sorts of weird ways. We saw it here in
Philadelphia when the Eagles beat the Patriots in the Super Bowl with a backup quarterback and a
number of veterans who had washed out of other situations. We saw it work for the Toronto Raptors,
who beat the supposedly unstoppable Golden State Warriors after the Warriors saw almost all of their
good players go down with significant injuries. For God’s sake, the Kansas City Royals won a World
Series in 2015 with a roster full of largely forgettable players. In each of those cases, success came and left really quickly. And, well, so what.

Sixers fans aren’t looking at the Harden Era as the beginning of a long run of dominance. But on current evidence, there is no reason to say that Harden’s addition to the Sixers hurt their chance of winning a title this season – far from it. So we’d appreciate it if the syndicated yakkers and network talking heads would sit this one out.

Joel Embiid Over 30.5 Points (-120, DraftKings Sportsbook)

In retrospect, we all should have retired our mortgages or at least our car payment balances with these Embiid points props. In the last eight games, Embiid has scored at least 34 points six times. The Knicks had absolutely nothing for Embiid on Sunday beyond sending him to the line, where he shot 27 free throws and made 23 of them. The only risk here is really a situation where the Sixers kill the Knicks off early and Embiid sits early. But there’s been precious little of that lately.

On Sunday we told you that as long as the Sixers were healthy and as long as they were facing a non-playoff team, lay the points and don’t look back. Nothing that happened on Sunday would make us stray from that guideline. This line could have been 13.5 and we would have laid the points. We’re very comfortable with 10.5.
