On one hand, we want to savage Sixers head coach Doc Rivers for running his best players into the ground as of late. On the other hand, what else is he supposed to do?
James Harden played 42 minutes on Wednesday night. Tobias Harris played 39 minutes, and Tyrese Maxey played 38. On Monday night, their minutes totals were: Maxey 42, Harden 39, Harris 37. DeAndre Jordan’s arrival has allowed Rivers to spell Joel Embiid for about 13 minutes a night, but there has definitely been a drop-off from Andre Drummond in those minutes.
The heavy workload for the other starters is not optimal, but there’s probably no way around it. Georges Niang has had moments this season, but in the past two games he has scored eight points in 25 minutes and then three points in 19 minutes. At some point, if Niang is your sixth-best player, your team probably isn’t deep enough to make a serious playoff run.
