On its face, this seems like an indefensibly stupid choice by the Nets. Simmons hasn’t played a game this season and there is no timetable for his return to active status. The Nets could easily have left Simmons in Brooklyn “to continue his rehabilitation” or whatever. Instead, the Nets are intentionally putting a player whose mental and emotional wellbeing has been, let’s just say, an issue all season, and submitting him to the wrath of the fan base he betrayed. It’s a weird choice.

Thinking of this as a long game play, though, it makes more sense. Putting Simmons on the court could have been pretty disastrous, but there is only so much negative attention Simmons can receive sitting on the bench (especially once the game starts). Once Simmons is past this night, the only real hurdle with regard to getting past his time in Philadelphia and how it ended will be playing a game here, and it could be a really, really long time before that ever happens. Allow us to explain.

The Nets play in Philadelphia twice a year in the regular season. That’s it. This makes it not only possible but probable that the Nets traded for Simmons figuring that they may just scratch Simmons for any of those regular season appearances in Philadelphia as a default setting. Players miss games all the time for all sorts of reasons. They can use the Sixers games in Philadelphia as load management, assuming Simmons ever plays again.

“Hey, but that’s not going to work in the playoffs!” We hear you, but as Tom Petty once famously sang, “Most things I worry about never happen anyway.” The Sixers and the Nets have faced each other in the playoffs three times in the past 43 years: 1979, 1984 and 2019. Not only do both teams have to make the playoffs, they have to end up in each others’ half of the draw OR meet in the conference final. The odds on this are far longer than you think. If this season ended today, the Sixers would play the Cavaliers in the first round, and the Nets would be playing the Charlotte Hornets in the play-in for the right to take on the Milwaukee Bucks. Do you see the Nets getting past the Bucks this season? We don’t.

Embiid did whatever he wanted on Monday night because the Bulls were without Nikola Vucevic. Sixers fans who watched Drummond this season know that while he isn’t a multi-faceted scoring threat, he is still a menace from a rebounding perspective. Durant has looked good since returning from the injury that cost him about six weeks. In the three games since his return he has gone over 30 points twice. But In the longer view, Durant has scored fewer than 30 points in seven of his last 10 starts where he played more than 13 minutes.
