This was a strange Sixers season, which is really saying something given the team’s often bizarre history.
Notable happenings in the season included but are not limited to:
- COVID-19 impacted several of the games in the early part of the season. Joel Embiid missed nine games. Tobias Harris missed six games. It’s impossible not to wonder whether their absences during those games are the difference between, say, the second seed in the conference playoffs and their likely fourth seed.
- Ben Simmons never played one minute for the Sixers this season. After being traded, Simmons didn’t play a minute for his new team, either. Regardless, the way Simmons’ Sixers career ended was something none of us had ever seen before.
- James Harden made a splashy entrance, and has played for the most part at the level he was playing at for the Nets. But Harden’s playoff record is fairly woeful, and if the Sixers fail to proceed past the second round of the playoffs (again), it will be interesting to see what the Sixers do with Harden, or what they don’t do with him.
- Embiid carried the Sixers for long stretches of the season and, in a world without Nikola Jokic, Embiid would be the consensus Most Valuable Player in the league. Presently, though, Jokic seems likely to win the award, and if Embiid never has a season this great again, he may be left to rue how close he came this time.
- Head coach Doc Rivers is in the second year of his five-year contract, and already there are Sixers fans concerned about Rivers’ unusual rotations and, as with Harden, past playoff shortcomings.
If the Sixers beat the Pistons, they will finish with a record of 51-31. That’s supposed to be cause for excitement. If we’re all being truthful, though, the Sixers are demonstrably worse than the three teams ahead of them in the Eastern Conference standings (Miami Heat, Milwaukee Bucks, Boston Celtics) and they might not be as good as the Raptors. A win tonight would be nice, but it won’t fix what’s broken.

One of the most damaging losses of the season came at Detroit a week and a half ago. The Pistons have fallen back into losing ways since then, and the revenge factor for the Sixers should be pretty high.
