Flyers move:

It’s being reported that the Flyers are getting a 7th rounder this year as well, in exchange for a 2022 4th round pick, plus a future 3rd and 2nd. No confirmation yet on what years those are, but I’ll update. He’ll sign a two-year contract extension at about $5 million per.

EDIT –

terms of the deal:

“The Philadelphia Flyers announced today they have acquired defenseman Tony DeAngelo and a seventh-round pick (220th overall) in this year’s draft from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for the Flyers fourth-round pick (101st overall) in 2022, third-round pick in 2023 (the lowest of the three picks) and a second-round pick in 2024, according to President of Hockey Operations & General Manager, Chuck Fletcher.”

DeAngelo is from Sewell. South Jersey dude, 26 years old coming off a 51-point season with the Canes. That included 41 assists with an average ice time of 19:49.

At this point I’ll defer to Russell:

As Ant and I have discussed on Snow The Goalie, there’s a belief that Ryan Ellis will go on LTIR to start the season. Facing the reality that his team could be without its top pair RHD, Chuck Fletcher made a move that some in the organization wanted to a year ago. There was a belief that Comcast had optics issues with bringing in DeAngelo following some unseemly tweets and confrontation with teammates in New York.* He’s had a year to mature and reports out of Carolina are that he was well-liked in the Hurricanes’ locker room. On the ice, he’s a power play QB who is a better right-handed version of Shayne Gostisbehere. Ultimately, the biggest negative of this deal comes from the cost to acquire DeAngelo’s rights. Keep in mind that the player was set to become an RFA. Instead, Chuck Fletcher dealt three picks, including a 2nd round and 3rd round pick in 2024. Given his horrific track record as the lead shot-caller for the Flyers, it stands to reason Fletcher won’t even be here to make a selection in this draft. So once again, the Flyers have opted to let Fletcher oversee another critical juncture of their franchise’s recent history and the return is mediocre at best. If this front office, including the “retired” advisors whose opinions are still highly-regarded, wants to clear space to offer Johnny Gaudreau a 7-year deal worth north of $9m AAV, Fletcher has his work cut out for him.
