Big Move: Eagles Trade for Chauncey Gardner-Johnson
Wow, we’ve got some cut day wheeling and dealing here from Howie Roseman:
Shocker: The #Saints are trading DB Chauncey Gardner-Johnson to the #Eagles, sources tell me and @TomPelissero. After extension talks broke down, the focus shifted from keeping Gardner-Johnson to trading him. Philly lands a starter. pic.twitter.com/k6bxvziA84

Eagles are releasing starting safety Anthony Harris, per source.

Okay, so Harris is gone. Jaquiski Tartt is gone. In comes Gardner-Johnson, who is a massive shit talker. This guy is one of the biggest instigators in the NFL, a fourth round pick out of Florida a few years ago. No word on terms of the trade yet, but will update when I see something.
UPDATE – here are the terms:
Full trade terms:
🏈Eagles receive safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson and Saints’ 7th-round pick in 2025.
🏈Saints receive the Eagles’ 5th-round pick in 2023 and the worse of their two 6th-round picks in 2024.

That means your safety group now looks like:
- Marcus Epps
- Chauncey Gardner-Johnson
- Reed Blankenship
- K’Von Wallace
- Andre Chachere
More cuts to come, but at the end of the day the Birds don’t move forward with Harris OR Tartt and decide to make a trade instead.
Interestingly enough, CGJ hasn’t played a lot of safety recently:
Chauncey Gardner-Johnson’s career snap counts playing safety, per @PFF
2019: 69
2020: 2
2021: 9Bulk of his playing time has been at slot CB. #Eagles

They’ve got Avonte Maddox in the slot though, so he’ll be a safety here no doubt, just an intriguing wrinkle here.
Chauncey Gardner-Johnson seems like a prime candidate for a player that everybody HATES but Philadelphia LOVESpic.twitter.com/VYFZuEtd1k
