The first-place Philadelphia Union continue to demolish opponents, winning 6-0 this weekend against the hapless Colorado Rapids, who had a man sent off in the first half and could only do two things at Subaru Park – jack and shit.

In the process, the U set another record:

That’s not the most six-goal wins in a single season, it’s the most six-goal wins in Major League Soccer history, and they did it during a six-week stretch that began on July 8th and brought us to August 27th. In that time frame, they have eight wins, two losses, and victories of 7-0, 6-0, 6-0, and 6-0. Three of those wins were at home and the fourth was on the road.

As it stands:

  • the Union are first place in the east with 15 wins, four losses, and nine draws
  • they are unbeaten at home
  • they’ve scored 57 goals
  • they’ve conceded only 20 goals, which leads MLS by a ten goal margin (LAFC is #2 in this department with 30 conceded)
  • they top MLS with a +37 goal differential
  • they are three points behind LAFC for the Supporter’s Shield, though LA has a game in hand
  • they are five points ahead of Montreal in the east and will likely wrap up home field advantage in the playoffs

There’s an outside chance they snag a second Supporter’s Shield here. The remaining schedule is not difficult, with three home games and three road games against beatable teams. LAFC has to play at Dallas, at Minnesota, and at Portland, and their slate is slightly tougher, but the Union are going to need them to slip up along the way. The tiebreaker is total wins, not goal differential, and right now LA has 18 wins, so barring a big drop off, it’s hard to see Philly sliding in there and stealing the Shield, but it’s still possible.

Anyway, the U are insanely good. They are a legitimate title contender. They can’t stop scoring and they’ve got the #1 defense in the league. They are firing on more cylinders than you can fit underneath your hood. If they were a Ford F350 in the Spring, they’re an Abrams Tank in the Summer.
