Former Philadelphia Eagle Herm Edwards is no longer Arizona State’s head football coach, out after 4.25 seasons and a 30-21 home loss to Eastern Michigan.

What’s crazy is that it looks like he didn’t even make it off the field before the news was delivered:

Pretty wild. Not sure I’ve ever seen anything like that before. We always joke about leaving the coach on the tarmac, or making him walk home or whatever, but he didn’t even make it off the field here before I ASSUME he was told that ASU was pulling the plug. Get Jerry Seinfeld’s lip reader in here for confirmation.

They called this a “mutual agreement,” for what it’s worth, but it’s important to note as well that the Sun Devils are currently being investigated by the NCAA for recruiting and COVID policy violations. They lost a ton of players as well. It was pretty ugly out there in Tempe.

Edwards’ ASU tenure started well enough actually, with a 7-6 first season followed by 8-5 and a bowl game win over Florida State. They went 2-2 during the COVID year and 8-5 again, but after beginning 1-2 this year and the NCAA hovering, it probably made sense to move on at this time. Ultimately, the previous guy they fired, Todd Graham, ended up having a better run than Edwards.
