I got this email from a reader:

“Kevin, I have an idea. When the Phillies won the 1980 NLCS in Houston, they of course wore the blue road uniforms we are so familiar with now. When the Phils go down to Houston for the World Series, they ought to wear them for the road games.”

Hmm.. What say you? I like the historical significance here, but is it too much to go to a throwback/alternate uniform for the World Series? I’m not sure. I am open to your thoughts on this.

For some background here, the Phils beat the Astros 3-2 in that series, which was really competitive. Steve Carlton got the game one win, then the Astros won 7-4 in game two and won 1-0 in 11 innings in game three. Down 2-1 in the series, the Phils then came back and won 5-3 and 8-7 in games four and five, both of which went to 10 innings. That’s three straight extra-inning games en route to the World Series against the Kansas City Royals.

That Houston team was pretty damn good. I was -4 years old at the time, but the Astros had Jose Cruz and this guy Terry Puhl, plus an aging Joe Morgan. They had a couple of All Stars that season. And for the Phils, Manny Trillo and Greg Luzinski knocked in four runs each while Pete Rose hit .400 in the series.

Some highlights if you wanna take a walk down memory lane (edit – those 1980 Astros uniforms were really sick) –
