DeVonta Smith rang the bell Saturday night and then got Jayson Tatum’s jersey after the game, because he’s a big Celtics fan:

The old curmudgeon opinion is that this constitutes a violation because Smith is an Eagle and shouldn’t be supporting the rival of another Philly team. That take is passé now, since a younger generation of fans think it’s fine to continue rooting for whatever teams you liked before you were drafted, signed as a free agent, or traded for. A recent example is when Jalen Hurts showed up to a presser wearing an Astros hat, and while some people whined, the vast majority did not give a flying shit, because he’s from the Houston area.

The thing with DeVonta, however, is that he grew up in small town Louisiana, so there’s obviously no geographical connection to Boston. The Hornets/Pelicans would have been the closest team. He’s talked about his Celtics fandom before, most notably on John Clark’s podcast, but the backstory of how he actually became a Boston fan seems to missing.

Doesn’t really matter though. Shouldn’t matter. Some discretion might help in the optics department, since he’s getting Tatum’s shirt right after a crushing Sixers home loss on national TV. But still, the guy caught 95 passes for 1,196 yards and seven touchdowns this season, so he can show up to the game wearing a Lakers hat, Yankees shirt, Celtics socks, and a Manchester City belt buckle and it would be fine.
