Flyers Season Ends with a 6.5% Chance of Getting the Top Draft Pick
Mercifully, the Flyers’ 2022-2023 season has come to an end.
They beat the Blackhawks 5-4 in overtime on Thursday night to finish with a record of 31-38-13, missing the playoffs as expected but winning too many games along the way.
According to Tankathon, they go into the offseason with a 6.5% chance to land the top pick in the NHL Draft:
The Blue Jackets have one more game to play, so their number could still shift here, but the Flyers finished with 75 points and are on the outside, looking in. Just for the sake of the exercise, I hit the simulator 10 times and it gave me Anaheim and Chicago three times each, then the Jackets, Red Wings, Canadiens, and Sharks.
“So you’re telling me there’s a chance?” is basically what we’re looking at here. The Flyers are Lloyd Christmas in the Bedard sweepstakes.
For some more wonderful numbers to wrap up this shit burger of a season, the Flyers did the following (via SportRadar) –
- 220 goals (tied for 28th)
- 276 goals against (10th most)
- -56 goal differential (26th)
- 2,416 shots on goal (23rd)
- 174 even strength goals (27th)
- 208 even strength goals against (11th worst)
- -34 even strength goal differential (26th)
- 2,057 even strength shots on goal (20th)
- 31.5 opponent shots on goal per game (12th most)
- 74.7% penalty kill (26th)
- 35 power play goals (tied for dead last)
So on and so forth. It was a dreck season with some minor bright spots scattered in. TK hit 30+ goals and had a nice year. Owen Tippett added 49 points and we got good, long looks at Morgan Frost, Noah Cates, Cam York, and Wade Allison.
Beyond that, time to start cleaning house.
