So this guy was Matt Strahm the whole time, huh? Narc:

Did he not listen to the addendum in the U.T.L.E.Y petition? Everyone already agreed they wouldn’t drive drunk! There’s no need for MLB teams to stop beer sales in the 6th inning like he’s calling for:

Appearing on the ‘Baseball Isn’t Boring’ podcast, the Phillies pitcher made it very clear such an alteration is that exact opposite of what should be taking place.

“The reason we stopped hitting the seventh before was to give our fans time to sober up and drive home safe, correct? So now with a faster pace game, and me just being a man of common sense, if the game is going to finish quicker, would we not move the beer sales back to the sixth inning to give our fans time to sober up,” he explained. “Instead, we’re going to the eighth, and now you’re putting our fans and our family at risk driving home with people who have just drank beers 22 minutes ago.”

Strahm continued, “I’m not surprised. When you mess with billionaires’ dollars, to find a way to make their dollars back. My thing is, when you’re looking at the safety of your fans, that’s probably not the smartest decision to extend it into the eighth. And, again, just being a common sense thinker, I think as a fan of the game, and just looking out for people, it would make more sense he stopped the sales in the sixth.”

I don’t understand this argument. If people are going to drive drunk they’re going to drive drunk. Isn’t this all based off of free will anyway? 99% of Phillies fans who are driving to games are already choosing not to drive drunk. Why punish the people who took Uber or public transportation by stopping beer 90 minutes into a game? Especially when it’s accessible everywhere in and around the stadium. Pass and Stow is open until the end of the game. Fans in the Diamond Club and suites can drink until the last pitch. Then you have Xfinity Live! right across the street. There’s a casino with a bar next to the stadium. You have Chickie’s and Pete’s down the street within walking/driving distance. It doesn’t matter when you cut off beer.  If you’re gonna drive drunk, you’re doing it because you’re an asshole and not because the Phillies moved last call to the 8th or cut it off in the 6th. Bars and restaurants in PA don’t stop selling beer at 1 a.m.

The 8th inning isn’t even a new concept for some MLB teams. The Baltimore Orioles were selling beer until the 8th inning years before the pitch clock was invented and the only DUI I can remember is Sidney Ponson. The Rangers had a couple of games where they sold beer into the eighth last year as well. The Phillies should give their fans the opportunity to prove to them they can have this too. If we didn’t let people in this country make their own choices we’d still be speaking British!
