Jalen Hurts has the NFL's 4th-Most Turnovers
Jalen Hurts lost a fumble in the first quarter on Sunday night, which was his 15th turnover in 13 games. The SportRadar data shows he’s tied for 4th-worst in the NFL in total giveaways this season:
Five fumbles lost and 10 interceptions thrown. Only Josh Dobbs, Josh Allen, and Sam Howell have more combined giveaways.
For some context, Hurts only had eight turnovers in the 15 games he played last year, a combination of two lost fumbles and six interceptions to put him in a four-way tie for 29th. He threw nine picks and lost two fumbles during his first full year as a starter, so he’s already crested career-worst numbers with four games left to play.
The thing about the fumbles is that he’s on pace to run less and throw more compared to last season. It’s been a combination of in-pocket and out-of-pocket stuff, the latter low-lighted perhaps by Dallas last night and the fourth-quarter Patriots fumble in Week 1. His individual shortcomings in this department are a big reason why the Eagles have a -4 turnover margin, which is 20th-worst in the league. They went to the Super Bowl last year on the strength of a +8 number, and finished flat (0) in 2021. They haven’t had a negative turnover differential since the disaster 2020 season.
