James Bradberry Paid Homage to Izel Jenkins While the Young Corners Actually Played Well

Here’s a wider angle of Seattle’s game-winning touchdown on Monday night:

There was plenty of discussion about this play after the loss, which was hideous. Brutal. A backbreaker. Harbor talks about Matt Patricia’s call, which left Bradberry 1v1 on 3rd and 10.  It’s a disguised coverage where Sydney Brown is leaving his safety spot to handle the running back instead. Four-man rush. They’ve got Bradley Roby on DK Metcalf, and Reed Blankenship is shading to that side, so obviously he’s not going to get back over to help Bradberry.

You had some people criticizing Patricia for hanging his corner out to dry, which is fair enough.

The other side responded with some version of “he can’t get beat by a rookie 1v1 in that situation.” That is also true! Someone has to take DK, and with Darius Slay not playing, Bradberry’s matchup on this play was with Jaxon Smith-Njigba. He simply gets beat for speed and can’t keep up.

The truth, as always, is probably somewhere in the middle. Bradberry has to be better, but Patricia probably should have been aware that his top corner was getting cooked all night long. It’s one thing to trust a guy, but you also have to know when that guy just doesn’t have it on a given night, as exhibited here:

He’s been having a poor year. And the annoying thing about last night is that the young corners played well. Eli Ricks, Kelee Ringo? Decent games from both. Sydney Brown had some less-than-stellar snaps out there, and Josh Jobe played two forgettable snaps, but the worst player in the secondary was the guy who just got a three year, 38 million dollar contract.
