Let’s get it back to the Wings, who have an “Emo Evening” coming up on Saturday:

The Wings are extremely excited to welcome The Starting Line for a halftime performance during the January 27th game versus San Diego. The band’s halftime set will headline ‘An Emo Evening,’ the annual theme night that encourages Wings fans to embrace their inner emo and enjoy classic pop punk music throughout the game.

The stage for the performance will be located in the Wings Party Zone, located at turf-level. The Party Zone is a General Admission section, and your first 3 beverages are included with each ticket (beer, seltzer, soda, water).

Originally from Bucks County, The Starting Line has been making music since 1999 including the hits The Best Of Me, Island, Up And Go, and Bedroom Talk.

I think we need to have a deep conversation about the difference between “emo” and “pop punk,” because they’re being used interchangeably these days. You see both of those terms written in the blurb above.

I’ve always felt like emo was Dashboard Confessional and The Promise Ring, you know, soft music for softies. “Your hair is everywhere” and all of that pussy stuff. But then people started putting these emo listicles together and I saw bands like Jimmy Eat World and Taking Back Sunday on there. When did those bands become emo? They’ve always been spiritually closer to alternative rock and pop punk than anything that came from the indie or emo tree. Some of the bands you see on these “emo” lists have post-hardcore sounds as well. I guess you gotta look at groups like My Chemical Romance and Fall Out Boy and determine what side of the spectrum they exist on.

I am genuinely curious when it comes to this topic.

Quick aside: Mitch Jones has 11 goals and 20 assists in five games for the Wings this year. I made the case to include him on our latest list of top 25 Philadelphia athletes, but was shouted down by idiots like Kyle Pagan and Russell Joy. Mitch Jones is one of the top 25 current Philly players. It’s not even a discussion.
